I love the Silver Bear ammo 60 grain load...any experience out there?
I'm a huge fan of the 5.45 cartridge. I have shot Wolf 60 and 70 grain, Silver Bear 60 grain, and a whole lot of 53 grain Russian surplus. I haven't found a load yet that won't shoot fine in my AK74's. It is a highly underrated cartridge in this country.
Any experience out of an AR15 platform in the 5.45?
Yes, and my experience has been almost universally negative. There are a few good rifle options, but no 100% reliable magazines. Some work, some don't, some start working after a break in period, and some stop working after a break in period. They are not trustworthy enough to be anything except plinkers.
My Bulgy '74 seems to like the surplus ammo a lot better than the 60gr loads. I get a lot of flyers with 60gr. The Russian surplus gets me about 1.5" groups. Very reliable and mags used to be cheap.
I have not tried an Ar-15 upper. I heard that the old C-Products mags worked well. A friend had one and shot a lot on full-auto and didn't seem to have any issues.
The 60gr loads work fine in my ole Intrac MkII with it's fast rifling twist. My 74s with the US made 1-8 twist Green Mountain barrels are not so fond of it. No key-holing, but not as accurate. Surplus Bulgarian and Russian ammo works fine in them all.
I like the 5.45 rifles. Lighter than the 7.62 rifles. Recoil is minimal. I wish I had bought more East German bakelite mags when they were cheap. The plastic mags, like the Bulgarian factory 10s, like to split down the front when dropped loaded. The US plastic mags function fine, but also spew ammo and/or crack when dropped loaded.
All ive shot out of mine so far is the Surplus stuff. I did a bit of modifying to it this year(new grip, sling) id like to add a optic package not sure yet though if i want a low power(1-5_ scope, a red dot, or a reflex type set up...only thing ive come NOT to like about the AK's in general are their sights. ive got great eyesight and that narrow rear notch is just a PITA to pick up and get aligned quickly with so little light between it and the front post..just too narrow..Optics will fix that right up though. Getting a side mount(hate forward/scout type set ups) will probably be the last gun related(other than ammo) thing I do this year. Already spent my gun spending $$ on the M1 Garand...have JUST about enough left over to get some optics for the AK .
The Ar Stoner and C-Product mags seem to be made by the same plant...both have the same 5.45x39 and underneath it has ss, meaning stainless steel stamped in the side. Different baseplates of course. Interesting thing, the loaded magazines, when the round is in the right hand part of the magazine it is wobbly, meaning the round is not firmly held. Ar15 loaded with GI issue mags and the 5.56 round is firmer in the magazine.
Another Intrac II user on board. If there is something better out there chambered for the 5.45, I would like to see it. I shoot surplus through it. Its a champ.
5.45 love.....absolutely. I was kinda forced into it bc the state of CT doesn't allow AK platform rifles chambered in 7.62x39. So to fill the AK niche i bought one of these....
I put a S&W 5.45x39 upper on an Armalite lower and couldn't be happier. C-Product mags work flawlessly. US 30 round GI mags work well if you keep the the round count to 20 or less.
My Bulgarian 74 on a NoDak Spud receiver has been fed nothing but Russian 53gr. surplus ammo with zero problems. I only use circle 10 or 21 mags with it.
Looks like we got about the same gun
I bought some Tula black box when I first got my Polish Tantel and it wouldn't cycle with it. Tried some Commie surplus and it worked fine.
Looks like it! Did you get it from Centerfire? I replaced my furniture with a "Nato length" set from K-Var in green. I was glad mine came with the zig-zag cut muzzle brake since I read many did not.
I would love a Mini Draco in 5.45... As far as I can tell, they don't exist or are not imported to the US
