Been reading that putting the Magpul AFG on my AR pistol will not classify it as an SBR or AOW (don't really get the difference b/w the two either...). Just wanted to see if any experts can clarify the legality of doing something like this before I get harassed by a local LEO. Thanks.

ATF published a letter I saw on anther forum saying the AFG was legal. Not sure if it applies to afg2. I'd write them yourself just so you have an accurate source

Like 4095 said, the ATF published a letter saying the original AFG was legal. Me personally, I'd write them and get a written response before doing so just to cover my own backside, but that's just me.

As to the difference between SBR and AOW: an AOW has never had a stock on it, and can have a vertical foregrip. An SBR is a rifle (i.e. has a stock) that also has a barrel less than 16", and/or an overall length of less than an amount that I can't recall off the top of my head at the moment. You mostly see AOWs with short, pistol-gripped shotguns with a vertical foregrip, such as the Serbu.

Key point of all this is that if you put a vertical foregrip on a pistol then you have created an AOW which requires a $200 tax stamp and an ATF Form 1 (at least a six month wait).

The Magpul angled forgrip has been determined to not be a vertical foregrip and can be installed on an AR pistol without turning it into an AOW.

I am building up a short barreled .300 ACC AR. To start I am building it as a pistol and when the ATF Form 1 gets here I will put a stock on it. I have been considering putting an angled foregrip on it just to make it more shootable as a pistol.
