I just came across this, my mother got it from my uncle last week.

I thought it was something I would share, as it's an incredible story, and a part of history that everyone should know and never forget.

Please feel free to share it if you want, just let me know.

What an inspiring story of good triumphing over the ultimate evil. To come through all that and pass on the legacy he preserved for posterity. You are fortunate to have this account to pass down. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for sharing that letter, very interesting. Unfortunately all that history is being forgotten, it is very important to remember what happened.

A lot more escaping and relocating on the run, and being rounded up again, than I would have thought.

Must have been disheartening, to have no place to get away from it all after you've escaped.

Thanks for that. Very sad, yet needs to be remembered.

What an awesome story. That's a Steven Spielberg movie.

Having to go hundreds of kilometers at night on foot and a portion of that carrying his sister. So many incredibly heroic things he did, yet at one point he says that they didn't have the courage to try to escape.

Here's to hoping he has 10,000 decendants.

Well, if it means anything, I am one of 2 grandsons of his. My uncle had 2 daughters, and my aunt had 1 son and 1 daughter. And I have 2 sons, so their will be a few more generations with our last name.

Makes me think just what an armed force against a civilian population can do when all the armed force does is follows orders.

What an amazing piece of family history to have! So much of that was simply lost. I'm going to share this with my kids, i think they will be double interested since we stayed at your rental house!

Eta: my grandparents were also Rose and Harry, and my great grandfather was a tailor. My family was from Russia and Poland but left during earlier pogroms and were in the US before the war.

    Thanks for posting/sharing this.

I had a neighbor who I worked for off and on. (basicly just helping out when his hired workers quit) till he found another.
I found out he was BIG in Furniture. One day the "authorities" came in and said they were taking over his business. "any objections?" He of course had none. (as a Jew) He handed over key, "Do you want me to come in and show you things?" They said it was not needed, go home.
He left and left. Clothes on his back. Left $$$ family heirlomes, business, etc, etc. Those that didn't died.
It took him over a yr to get to USA. Built a business in Chicago. Married, kids, Sold business and bought few THOUSAND acres in MN.

I have found the picture of your great grand father in the Yad Va-shem website. May I post a link?

My grandmother was hiding from the Nazis in Budapest with her parents and 8 brothers and sisters. They all survived (Second largest family to survive the war).

My grandfather (who died about a year ago) lost his parents. He was forced to work for the Hungarian army during the war and was almost executed but survived.
