    Depending on your needs, yes. I think Royal Purple and Amsoil are the kings of the hill. I use RP in my truck (would use Amsoil as well)because I drag a 6,000-lb travel trailer around the country, usually 2,000 miles per trip. When I'm not towing, I usually drive it like I stole it, so I like the extra protection from the synthetic. I get RP off eBay for $6.20 a quart shipped.

    I use Mobil 1 in the wife's minivan and my car.

    I would recommend Amsoil/RP it if you use your vehicle hard.

    I know people who swear by it. I just run Mobil 1 in my car. It is easier to find.

    Mobil 1. Easier to find too. If your car needs something more than Mobil 1 it has a problem that oil won't help.

    Is there any truth to Amsoil's claim of being able to run their engine oil for 15,000 miles???

    Yes, many AMSOIL oils will last 15000 miles or longer.

    We do indeed have oils that last up to 35,000 miles or 1 year under normal service and 17,500 or 1 year under severe service.

    We have many oils that are rated to 25000, 12500 severe.

    Some people run their oil forever, just changing the filter annually and adding the oil to make up that loss. this is especially true with bypass customers as they have large filters that take out even smaller particles. They only filter a small amount of oil at a time to a much larger degree, but it is "always on".

    To run them over 1 year, you should test your oil which is about $25 postage paid. ($20 wholesale)

    Also, for best results you should use the Amsoil synthetic oil filter and Amsoil synthetic air filter for your vehicle.

    Amsoil Corp is always developing and adding new products and recently released 14" dia air filters for older vehicles like my 73 z28 with a 350 with up to 6" rise and synthetic top.

    Synthetic fibers are many, many, many times smaller than standard media nd allow many more small spaces so flow, whether air or oil, is increased while filtration, space between fibers, is kept to the same or smaller (better filtration) than standard filters.

    Amsoil Synthetic Air Filters are good for 100,000 mi or 4 years with annual GENTLE cleaning.

    I forgot to respond to the "easier to find" post. Amsoil products (Oil, filters, ngk plugs, trico wiper blades, mother's car care products, etc) can all be delivered to your doorstep.

    If you have a favorite small shop that you would like to buy amsoil at, put us in touch with each other and if you want to make a little residual income I will set you up as a dealer to make the lionshare of the profit.

    As a new dealer, retail accounts are the most profitable paying nearly 20% commission.

    What year, I will post links to the data sheets for the amsoil products. Not only does it meet specs, but everyone I know personally who has switched over to amsoil oil, ATF, or gear lube tells me their vehicle is smoother.

    I have my first friend/customer doing the full conversion in the next week or so. Oil, Oil filter, Air Filter, ATF, Gear Lube. His friend with a 1988 vette is doing oil, filter, air filter to start.

    Amsoil focuses on making it's products the best.

    I've used both Mobile 1 and Royal Purple, but have used Mobile 1 the longest. Recently went back to Mobile 1 simply because it costs a little less, is a little more comon to find, and is a pretty good lubricant. I still change my oil at factory intervals, regardless of fact that synthetic will go longer. I'm not regularly towing anything or driving that hard. I just want my motor to last a long time. I have never noticed any difference in gas milege between using conventional oil vs. Mobile 1 vs. Royal Purple. Royal Purple advertises documented increases in horse power. In the early 1990s, some Mustang magazine tested synthetic oils at the drag strip, and Mobile 1 was the only one that showed any actual performance increases as measured by time slips. I never thought about looking for Royal Purple on Ebay, but $6.20/qt. is good.

    Hell, if you are looking for cheap, Amsoil makes the jiffy lube version, the XL line, that is good for 7500-12000 mi for $6.00 per quart current pricing as of 9/26/2007. prices go up 10/1, but not by much. if you order by the case, it's 70.80 (5.90/qt) + 8.82 freight and your local tax. It is not as good as the TSO or TRO products, but if you are dumping it down the drain every 3-7k it's got plenty of phosphorous and zinc to protect your valve train for that period. it is recommmended for 6 mo. oil changes and they don't even recommend bothering with the high quality synthetic filters at that interval. just use a wix at $7 ea.

    BTW, get set up as a preferred customer and that case price drops to 51.60 (4.30/qt) plus the same freight. it costs $10 per 6 mo and saves a bundle.

    it's still better than the competition.

    I was going to use Amsoil and decided to go with Rotella T instead. It's a long-life diesel oil available at Wal-Mart. Both dino and syn are good and I have the Syn in my Kawasaki Concours, which has 55,000 miles on it. I've got 4000 miles on it this change and the bike has not used any oil. I am happy with it and it's $16/gallon at WM.

    For about $28 per gallon as a PC, you can get the best oil on the market (HDD) or for about $18 per gallon you can get full synthetic AME heavy duty diesel marine oil (what I use in my customer's generators and what I recommend for boats).

    In any case, you should use the synthetic filters.

    Petroleum oil is distilled by molecular weight and a lot of junk weighs the same amount as the "oil" you want.

    Eric, I am considering changing all the fluids out to Amsoil in my 2007 GMC Sierra new body style with 4.8L V8 (6 quarts oil) that will have about 8-9k miles at next oil change. Would you be willing to provide me a list of products and prices? And is it smart to switch to synthetic at this point, or just continue conventional oil usage for a certain period of time? Thank you.

    And who would perform a good install of a bypass filter on my truck?

    With the new vehicles, it is safe to switch to AMSOIL synthetics right away. Many new engines come with synthetic.

    Since you said it is a new style, I am betting it is not a classic. also, the 1500s were the only ones I saw with the 4.8L. I will post the on classic first

    In the transmission section, if you have a 4L60E it can be a deep or not pan. neither pan is deeper than the other, the deeper one just has ridges on the bottom, so you have to look at it. If you can't find out if you have a 4L60e or 4L80E, I can check my friend's truck to see if there is a code (he had a "shallow" pan)

    Other useful information in identifying proper products are:
    1. Maker
    2. Model
    3. Year
    4. Numbers
    5. Engine type (usually 8th letter of VIN, but if you don't know, you can just post everything but the last 6 numbers and I can look it up)
    6. Transmission type
    7. 4wd?
    8. differential types

    I know it is a lot of info, but the stuff I am posting has just been trimmed down to the best products.

    I can't give you exact prices because of AMSOIL policies, but I ordered the everything for a friend of mine with a 2wd 1500 with mostly the same products and the retail was around $420 and the wholesale was around $320 including the $20 for the PC program.

    The bypass is a whole nother beast as far as config options. preoilers, preferred installation location, etc. my bypass system with all the options for my ram2500 was about $650. (the preoiler alone is about $300).

    Some other good news. Amsoil will soon be selling a DOT 4 brake fluid. (also a DOT 3).

    I put the product codes before the product in the list and trimmed it down to only the best in each category. if you are going to convert, you might as well use the best AMSOIL has to offer.

    I am stationed up in El paso, TX so I get alot of city driving that puts hard driving and use on any automobile and then I get highway driving which is not bad but good when I go to DFW, San Antonio heading home to GA when I get leave. I do haul stuff around but not really any heavy loads at this time. I also find myself driving around out in the oped desert there.

    I will be getting in touch with you when I get back from over here in Iraq. I have a GMC Serria Extended Cab I bought brand new in May of 2006. between me and my wife we still have less than 6000 miles on it. I figure it would be a good time for me to try and get all the stuff I need for it to switch it over since I have been running all the service stuff from the dealership for the almost past two years and I want to keep everything running the best that it can.

    I can not remeber what GM calls the small block V8 but that is what I have in it. I will have to look at the tranny to see which one I have under it. It is only a 2WD. What all would you recommend for me to change out with the everything change over for this truck?

    There are 4.8, 5.3 and 6.0L v-8 that could fit that description.

    Do you have the body number 1500, 1500HD, 2500HD, 3500?

    The eighth character of the VIN should be engine type.

    Full conversion =

    Motor Oil, Air Filter, Oil Filter, Coolant, Transmission Fluid, Trans Filter, Rear Diff Fluid, Wipers, Plugs (probably not needed), wires (probably not needed).

    Even with few miles on it, petroleum oil should be changed every 6 mo to avoid sludge build up and reduce acidity. Amsoil SSO can be tested every year for about $20 and just change the filter.

    Regular coolants breakdown in about 3 years max and start eating water pumps, radiators, etc. AMSOIL is 7 year PG coolant.

    Post up when you get back from Iraq. it only takes about 2 days to get everything.
