Has anyone used a heavy duty trash barrel (I'm thinking Rubbermaid)
as an alternative to the 55 gallon poly drums?

If so, can they take the weight?

I have filled up WAY less sturdy trash bins with water.

The key would be keeping it from heating up in the sun.

Aceman is correct! It may not be the ideal container but it will work.

Material is thin, not sure how well plumbing a hose bib or output would go.

These types of things aren't overly resistant to UV. I've seen them go to crack and crumbling even in a shady area in a couple seasons.

Why not pickle barrels, like here-

Where I live you can buy a 55 gallon food grade barrel for $25 and they are very thick. I have some in my garage filled with water and they never leak.

im not sure i'm fully comfortable with trash can use as you would want to line them. id bet they have the same non food grade release agents used in buckets that people keep arguing back and forth on.

right now i am using food grade barrels from a local source for $12 ea and 300 gallon totes for $75 ea.

in an emergency, id use any container i could get short of the pesticide bottles :)

I looked on Craigs List and found a guy who had a thousand of them. I think that he was hooked up with a local pepsi bottler.

my barrels came from a local farm supply store. the 300 gallon tanks came from a guy on craigslist that transports honey in them and then steam cleans and resells them.
