I'm trying to find a cost effective solution to mounting a red dot on my SGL-21. I've concluded that an Aimpoint T-1, althought the best option, is out of my price range. I am looking for a quality sight in the $100-$250 range. I have an Ultimak gas tube replacement rail to mount the sight on. Co-witness ability would be best, even if it's lower third. As always, your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I have a Primary Arms mini red dot on mine. Love it. It's lasted for thousands of rounds and I don't baby it in the least. I recommend it.

Just shot a match with my AK. It got banged around pretty good but held zero with no problem.

I have the Bushnell on mine and also have the PA on another rifle. I actually shot the review for the Ulitmak/TRS set-up but haven't edited it yet.

Here's a preview---it's a good low cost alternative to the Aimpoint if you want a red dot on your AK

    Plouffe,

Did the gas tube replacement have any effect on accuracy?

It's the KZ offset mount. I have it on a few guns, including 870s---it's solid. For the money, it's great.

good deal- Ill check it out!

  8. I have a burris fastfire ii on a side mount rail. Got about 600 rounds through it. Has held zero so far and works great. When i got it a few months ago it was $200 with the picatinny mount from optics planet.

+1 for the Bushnell TRS-25. I have one on a Scout mount on my SKS-M and it has held up to the heat well.

No noticeable difference with the Ultimak but it was a good shooter to start with. Using the Red Dot helped me because I couldn't see the Iron's well due to poor vision.

I have a Bushnell TRS-25 on route to me. Will be testing it Saturday. I have a Eotech on my other AK on a TWS Dog leg rail. The Bushnell will be on a side mount.

Maybe my eyes are just bad, but I have an easier time getting my irons on target than one of the red dots mentioned.

    Tested the Bushnell TRS-25....
Really small. I didn't think it was so small. Which is good, on my side mount it doesn't add any noticeable weight. It's also low mount. I didn't have much of a problem getting a good cheek weld. Doesn't co witness.
Functions just like my AP. Setting 10 & 11 were ok in bright sunlight. Had it sighted in at 50 yards after 13 rounds out of the box.
    Seems to be sturdy.

Just bought a TRS-25. I am looking forward to comparing it to the Aimpoint H-1 I have. See how much of a difference the ~$400 got me with the Aimpoint. I have a feeling it isn't going to be as much of a difference as I want, but we'll see. lol

The difference is in the build quality and battery life. I have a T1 and TRS-25 and they are very different.

Agree but to me the only functional difference is battery life. The rest is preference. But, to me battery life is very important; being able to leave a red dot on for years and know it'll be ready when you may need it is a valuable trait.

I have had great success with the Primary Arms Micro dot. Held up very well on my VZ. I have suggested it to several friends who aren't ready to drop $500 on a red dot.

In fact, I am ready to bite the bullet and buy an Aimpoint so if anyone wants to buy my PA dot message me. I will cut you a deal!

I've been away for a while so I must ask... How are folks mounting lights on their AKs these days? Is this that dragonfly mount?

I'm about to put some cash into my 74. Thanks.

The Thorntail is pretty popular for Ultimak set ups. I run one and it works very well.
Not sure which mount plouffe is using there.

As do I. I'm very happy with my Thorntail.
