Another thread on Facebook caused me to form this theory: that many of us are avoiding being "alone" with our thoughts by being constantly "connected".

I observe so many folks continuously using Facebook, no matter what else they are doing - eating with others; working out; working; walking; driving... and sure there is the odd phone call. I would also throw in glocktalk as well as television.

Are many of us now afraid to be alone with our thoughts and instead dodge that prospect by perpetually being "connected"?

What do you folks say about this?

I love being alone. Aside from this place, I don't use any "social media," I don't own a television, and I go through about two books a week.

    This culture is rotting itself.

If I woke up tomorrow and I was the last MF'er left alive on this planet, that would be fine with me.

    :agree:
I think we are having a mass episode of selfish jerks who have little to really say or to contribute, but feel they will always be the most important person in the room. They need to shout it from the roof tops and lawyer up if the get their feelings hurt along the way.
Get over yourself, put the phone down and drive, turn the computer off and go shoot. Turn the TV off and talk to your kids.
We are rotting as a Nation from the inside out.

I'm a loner by nature. I enjoy peace and quiet with no radio, TV, or other distractions. The less people that I have to deal with the better off I am for the most part.

I require a couple hours of being alone per day to maintain my sanity. A walk in the woods with my thoughts is my idea of both going to church and seeing a psychologist.

I love my wife dearly. Everyone else can disappear.

I prefer being alone...I would probably be a hermit if it wasn't for my wife and daughter

Since you like kippered snacks with a huge slice of onion, Limburger cheese with Ritz crackers.

Being alone during that time would be easy!!

I think that would work fine to be "alone". Or eat lots of beans the night before and your natural gas will keep people away. :whistling:

frequently i see youngsters together and yet texting others or checking facebook or twitter while together when one would expect them to talk to each other. in movies and live events some are constantly texting or tweeting. it seems ubiquitous for a certain age group to constantly be on the smart phone and connected. and of course when they are "alone" they are likely behaving the same way.

are these "youngsters" and young adults addicted? afraid to miss something by not being on line? or are they avoiding being alone consciously or unconsciously?

A lot of thoughts on this:

    1. I hate being alone. HATE IT. When I'm in my boat on the lake by myself, I BETTER be surrounded by fish or it bothers me to no end.

    2. For those who are not of the religious persuasion, oh well. . . Our fallen nature encourages alone-ness. "No one will accept me. They are different. I want MINE." Man was not made to be alone and every fiber that wants to be alone is wrong. Sure, for a short time, great. But people somehow idolize those who are hermits. ???? Know what they were called 100 years ago? Crazy.

    3. I fight this every day. I'd rather be alone. . . and know it is wrong. Bleepin internet and TV don't help, but I love them soooooooo much. LOL
