I was always amused by an item in Peter Jenkins' amazing book, Looking for Alaska. Jenkins talks extensively about how important it is to be well-armed and cautious anytime you are in or near the brush in Alaska due to the serious threat of grizzly bears and other types of bears. After discussing this extensively he then states that (not a direct quote, but paraphrasing pretty tightly), "In Alaska, it is a standing joke that anytime you go into the brush it is always a good idea to have someone with you who can't run as fast as you can."
