9mm/.40 ammo ?

    I run GDHP and HST through my 26 and 23. The 124+P round has 410 ftlbs and the 180 grain HST has the same energy. I am baffled by how the 9mm being so much smaller than the .40 round can deliver so much punch. Can any of you reloaders chime in? Do both rounds have about the same grains of powder? Thanks.:whistling:

    Velocity is squared when calculating energy so energy climbs rapidly with velocity.

    In this case, the .40 has heavier bullet but lower velocity whereas the 9mm has lighter bullet but higher velocity. With it's lighter bullet the 9mm relies more on speed to get it's energy where the .40 doesn't need as much speed since it has the heavier bullet.

    Pick the combination of ammo/caliber that runs most reliable and accurate in your chosen weapon. Both get the job done when the round is placed on target.

    True. Kinetic energy is largely a function of bullet velocity. The 9x19 has always had much more velocity than the .40 S&W, so its energy is somewhat higher.
