This will be my 1st shotgun,it will be for HD and range. I've looked thru the forums and Remington website but don't know which one I should get? I really like how the 870 Marine looks but it's a bit pricey. I would like the shortest barrel possible and really like how they look with the folding stock/pistol grip. So which one(Police/Express/Tactical... Etc. Etc.) and what's the difference in them?????? THANKS

You can get a synthetic with an 18.5" barrel for around 300 if you look hard enough.

there are many options and many differences. i just completed my research and ended up with the 870 express with extended mag tube. 6+1, 18.5' barrel. i love it so far, knoxx spec ops stock is next on the list. thats one with the pistol grip and colapseable stock.

You could also look for a used one and then start swapping out for the parts you want. I don't know that it'll be any cheaper, but it will keep you from having to shell out the $$$ all at once. Besides, you can then swap parts back and forth for different uses: HD, hunting, etc.

I just bought one used, like new at Gander Mountain for $195 out the door. Express Magnum 12 ga., Matte finish, 28" VR barrel. I installed a sling swivel for 17.00, and bought the Remington ShurShot synthetic stock and forearm for $77.00 delivered from Natchez. I'm into it for $289 so far. Buying one off the shelf set up like this with a short barrel would cost $500 new. I'll be using mine mostly for turkey until I can buy a slug barrel for deer. There are tons of parts for these guns which is the main reason I bought one. I already had an Ithaca 37 deerslayer with 2 barrels and a scope but the aftermarket is non existent for them. As far as the different types. The older model 870s handle mostly 2-3/4" shells. The Express and Express Magnum will handle 2-3/4 or 3", and the Express Super Magnum handles up to 3-1/2" shells. The wingmasters are the fancy bird gun style with nice bluing and gloss wood stocks. I'd never buy one off the shelf set up for HD or tactical. You can save a lot of money putting it together yourself with whatever fits your needs best. http://www.remington.com/product-families/firearms/shotgun-families/pump-action-model-870.aspx

870 express is fine for HD set up "tactical" 18.5" barrel and stuff. You can still get other barrels for other hunting/clay stuff as well. but if really into clay or bird shooting, try to find a used 870 wingmaster. 870s are like Glocks, so many options and so many aftermarket stuff. You can't go wrong with any of the 870's if you ask me.

thanks, i love it, sticker price was $399 but i talked him down a little, they had 4 on the shelf and had extras after christmas so it was a steal and then he told me about the mail in rebate, so it worked out.

I looked at that ad, but I can't tell if it's a 20 ga or 12. Did I miss something?

+1. My dad bought an old, pretty much cherry 870 Wingmaster at a garage sale for $75!! He gave it to me and I bought a 18.5" barrel made by Mossberg and got wooden furniture from an 870 Police model off the message boards!

Ditto! I'd have never come across a deal like that on my own! I was more than happy to take it off his hands when he quit hunting\shooting.

I bough an Express Tactical brand new for $330 and added a Wilson big safety, XS Big Dot, and "fluffed and buffed" the action. Extrememly reliable and just as smooth as a seasoned Wingmaster.

I've brought it in to work and it run just as smooth/efficiently as the Police Magnums through the drills.
