I have one of the newer 870's (cheaper express version 18" bead) that uses the plastic "ratchet" type magazine spring retainer & the dimpled mag tube. I purchased a new barrel for it that has the irons sights and IMP CYL, however the new barrel has the ball detent unlike the orig. barrel.

Is it ok/safe to use a barrel that has the ball detent with the ratchet style retainer and cap?

I'd go to or call them at 231-690-0954

  3. It's safe. It's the way to go if you plan to install a tube extension. You'll need the detent to keep the tube extension from loosening under recoil.

You can still use the black plastic spring retainer to retain the mag cap and spring. You don't need it with a tube extension.

With a ext you will need to drill the mag tube dimples out.

Your existing magazine cap will push the detent ball down and out of the way so it is not an issue.
