So I'm looking to get into this price range, so what is a good brand to go with? Why does everyone say stay away from Kimber?

I own Springfields and an STI. Both are quality. The STI Guardian is probably my absolute favorite.

There were issues for awhile there in Kimber land. Some say they're kinda pricey AND they need a few rounds to work out their true potential. dunno 'bout that myself

May I assume we're talking new as opposed to used or milsurp? (Argie Sistemas perhaps as opposed to Uncle Sams old warhorse)
A few that come to mind...

    Colt (several in that range)
Springfield (a couple three or four, check out their RO)
Kimber (can be pricey but look at their Custom II)
S&W (pushing that envelope pricewise mind you)
STI (more pushing of the $ envelope a little here)
I understand Taurus makes them now... dunno nothing 'cept what I read online, appears to be another Taurus love/hate thing

etc (round up the usual $700-1000 suspects )

I'm old(er). When I got my first there was Colt and only Colt. (They've had issues as well over the years, don't let anyone tell you different) But as far as holding value, for some reason the prancing pony does well in regards to value... they all do to a point I'd opine.

What matters is "what are you looking for in your purchase?" Baseline milsurp clone, better sights, a few custom type touches... etc.

Check out Brians comparisons. Superb work on his (bac1023) part to keep 1911 fans addicted

    Check out my guide.

I've had no problems with my Kimbers. However, the best 1911 at $1000 or so is the STI Trojan, in my opinion.

In that price range based on my one sample I'd pick the Ruger SR1911. Everthing you really need and nothing you don't. With some wise shopping you would even have enough left for a few more magazines.

In that range, I recommend an E-Series. Great crisp trigger, very accurate, and very reliable. Mine's only had 1 malfunction (first mag) in about 1k rounds.

In that price range I would be I would be looking for a Colt Combat Elite. I have several high end 1911's but I have to say I love my Colt and carry it more than the others.

I just bought a STI Gaurdian in 9mm for 950. This was the first 40 rounds at 12 yards. Definitely the best shooter in my safe.

If you want a great shooting full size 5" look at the Springfield range officer. They run about 800 and have a matched barrel. Kimber makes a great gun, you only hear negatives and haters online. Everybody seems to be putting out a few bad guns as of late, I think the manufactures are trying to keep up demand and loosening QA standards.

I dislike the rail on it, otherwise I like the RIA very much.

I love ATI 1911s, but if I'm going to spend $800, I'm not going Filipino.
