.45ACP effectiveness out of short barrel

Discussion in 'Caliber Corner' started by PAGunner, Jan 19, 2012.

  1. My question is how effective is premium self defense cartridges such as Ranger T, HST, Gold Dot's both standard pressure and +P out of short barrels? When I say short barrel, I'm asking in particularly about the G30/36 3.78inch barrel.

The question I'm really getting at is, what is the minimum muzzle FPS that a .45 SD JHP would have to be traveling to be effective? 800FPS? 850? 750? And how much velocity does a shorter barrel bleed off for a .45ACP?

My son shot a NADA book(thicker than a phone book) with his G30 from about 10 yards using DT ammo and it blew right through it. It left a huge exit hole. Not sure on the FPS because what ever was listed on the box isn't accurate.

Which tells you very little, most bullets of any caliber, will go thru a 3" dry phone book.:whistling:
The 45acp bleeds off less vel in shorter bbls than higher pressure ropunds. I CCW a 1911OM, 3.5" bbl, it runs about 780-800fps w/ most 230gr JHP loads. I do like the 200grXTP or 185gr RGS in the shorter bbl recoil is easy to control & vel is still around 875fps-900fps+ w/ good expansion. The 230grRGS expands well even @ the 780fps low end.

Any of the bullets that have been designed or redesigned since the mid nineties should be fine out of a 30 barrel, really isn't that much shorter than the 21 barrel.

As always, there is some variation from one gun to the next, but these were my results with my handload (230 grain XTP and WSF powder).

    5" 1911: 856 fps
    Sig P220 (4.4" barrel): 824 fps
    G30: 827 fps

I'm not going to go so far as to call anything under 800 fps ineffective, but I sure prefer 825 as a minimum. It's really not that hard to achieve with a short barrel.
  10. I like to run 230gr. +p HST's out of my USPc.45, 3.8inch barrel. The added +p recoil is noticeable but doesn't bother me so much, I still shoot it quick and accurate when I do shoot some of my HSTs at the range.

I now feel confident I'm getting my velocities safely above the minimum effective range, thank you sir!

I find 45acp+P just a bit too much in a smaller/lighter gun. SInce good hits count more than 50fps vel, I pretty much stick to std pressures ammo in my lt.wt. carry guns. Just something to think about. Get a timer, do some 2, 4 & 6sht runs & see if you accuracy is really just as good using the +P ammo.:dunno:

HST in particular is designed to be very forgiving with it's velocity window, they won't have any problems expanding out of any normally encountered barrel length.

Maybe if you were rocking a 1.5", but I don't think they exist.

I got about 850 fps out of my G36 with Winchester Ranger T 230 gr.
