    I'm thinking about buying my first AR in .450 Bushmaster. Anyone out there have one or have any thoughts on this round?

    My local dealer offered me the carbine flattop for $1200 out the door.

    If I was looking for something like that, I would decide between .450 Bushmaster, .458 Socom, or .50 Beowulf almost exclusively on ammo availability.

    The beowulf and Socom might be more common and cheaper with similar results.

    Or look for a used .44 deerfield, but a 4 round mag might defeat the purpose, depending on intended use.

    I have the 458 socom and love it. I bought it as a hog hunting gun and let's just say it does the job. If you reload I would say this is the one for you. There are plenty of bullet choices.

    The ShrubMaster marketing dorks conveniently forgot that Jeff Cooper's "Thumper" requirement included a 20 round magazine.

    I like the idea of this caliber or a 458 SOCOM. My 3 AR-15's are all in 223/5.56. While they are very accurate and fun to shoot they really aren't good for much. A 450/458 would make a really good deer/hog gun out to 100+ yards.

    Biggest single difference between the two is the Bushmaster uses the slightly smaller diameter .45 pistol bullets, while the SOCOM uses .458" rifle bullets.

    I don't know if they have any significant differences in case capacity, but if you already reload for one variety of .45 and not the other, maybe that would help sway you one way or another.

    I've got the 16 inch upper. I used it last year for deer and managed to hit one at 200 yards. It flopped over like it was hit by a freight train! You're basically limited to the Hornady load, but it's plentiful and it gets the job done. I get my .450 ammo from Palmetto State Armory. I've heard that Sig 556 mags will reliably feed up to 12 .450 rounds without modification. I use the 5 round mag since my rifle is mainly for hunting. BTW, 200 yards is the .450's maximum useful range in most cases due to dropoff(although it could probably be used for further shots in the right hands).

    2,200 fps, with 2,600+ ft-lbs of Muzzle Energy?! Jesus! And I thought my .454 Casull carbine was pretty bad ass. But in looking at some of the heaviest loads for the .454 Casull, they don't even come close to the ballistics of this cartridge.

    If it were me I would get an upper in .308. The upper is cheaper. You can buy ammo at freaking wal-mart at a reasonable price , and it is big enough to kill anything in North America.

    .308 = AR10, not AR15.

    I think I'd prefer a FAL or M1A to a AR10 anyway.

    Thanks for all the feedback. I'm going with the .450.

    I would say that as much as I think the .450 BM would be cool to have, the ammo is too expensive and hard to come by. So, I bought a Marlin Guide Gun in .45-70. I can't knock the .450 BM choice over the .45-70, as I also have a hardchromed Guncrafter Model 3 in .50GI, which also is an expensive round that is hard to come by. So, if you want a cool ass .450 BM, I say go for it. :cool:

    My local gunstore owner said he had three cases in stock and keeps it on hand so I guess I'll buy it from him. I'll let you know how it goes.
