    Greetings,
My friend & I tested some rounds using Hornady's 225g FTX "Leverevolution" bullet, shot through a S&W .44 mag w/8 3/8" barrel, mounted red dot scope. I just wanted to post our results.

Hornady tested this bullet with a Ruger Redhawk w/7 1/2" barrel.

Tested Friday 7/27/12, sunny & 85 degrees with no more than a 5-7 mph wind.

    Case - Hornady
Case length - 1.260" (trimed to)
Bullet - 225g FTX LEVERevolution (Hornady)
    Bullet length - .850' DIA - .430"
    Primer - Winchester WLP
    Powder - Alliant 2400 @ 15.5g
    Burn rate #54 (Hodgdon)
    OAL - 1.645"
    Velocity - 1,168.5 fps (average 5 shot)
    Standard Deviation - 27.03701

Accuracy test at 30-60 & 90 yards. 5 rounds fired from a bench/gun rest position and 5 rounds from a standing free hand position. All test rounds fired perfectly with the charge weight of 15.5g giving us the best all around preformance.

Fired from this "Hand cannon" this round was not difficult to control with moderate kick/recoil, and surprisingly reacquisition was fairly quick. Since I have never owned a .44 mag, this first effort was not only fun to test/shoot but I think I just may have learned something as well.

I'm just guessing here, but I would imagine that you can run that bullet up over 1500fps from an 8+" barrel using H110/296 or LilGun. 1168fps is a nice very soft load for learning to shoot. I wonder what velocity that FTX was designed for?

    dla,

Hornady Factory Ammunition FTX 225g Remington Magnum -
Box lists velocity at 1,410 fps (this was clocked out of a rifle). Pushing this bullet at 1,500 pfs with those powders is possible in a rifle. (see Hornady's 8th edition page 736).

The Hornady manual 8th edition (page 980) lists velocity out of a Ruger Redhawk at 1,200 fps using Allinat 2400 with 15.5g, max for this powder.

I think you might be confusing pistol data with rifle data.

Alliant lists 21.4grs of 2400 under a 225gr jacketed bullet as max. This load clocks in at 1528fps out of a 7.5 inch barrel. W296/H110/Lil Gun will exceed max 2400's velocities by about 100fps.

This is my first go-around with this caliber/bullet so if others have done any of there own testing with the 225g FTX bullet I would really like to see that data.

I push a 240 grain XTP with H110 out of my handi rifle. 23 grains will get it up over 1800, probably closer to 2000fps

That sounds like Ruger Alaskan velocity. You can run a 300gr pill to 1200fps safely in a 7.5" barrel Redhawk.
