    Hello all,

I am new to the .223 / 5.56 world, as I just got a SCAR-16S. I haven't even shot it, yet! [IMG] But, I'm stocking up on ammo. I bought some Walmart Federal 100-value packs in .223 for $39.97 for a 100-round value pack a few weeks ago.

Last night, I bought some American Eagle (AE223 made by Federal) 100-round value packs at Gander Mountain, on sale, for $29.99. (A pretty good deal, I think.)

Visually (to my eye), the cartridges are IDENTICAL. Both are 55-gr. The only thing different is the graphics on the boxes.

Is there a difference between the two (I'm not aware of)? Thanks for any education you all can impart on me! :)

    Mike

Its possible, If you have a chronograph you could find out. I know that the federal XM-193 comes in a few different boxes with different markings, even though they are the same ammunition.

The Federal Value pack is .223 the Amer Eagle is either .223 or 5.56 Nato both should be marked one way or the other! Obviously 5.56 is not good in a .223 chamber! If your gun is a Nato chamber no problems! They might look the same But I found the AE .223 under powered! As well as the PMC rounds! Good plinking ammo! Don't expect great accuracy either! I get 1-2" at 100 yards with both!:wavey:

Thanks for your comments. I'm familiar with / aware of the differences (and indications for use) between .223 and 5.56 NATO. The AE ammo in my case is .223. So, they are both .223. Heck, I can't find any 5.56 (for my SCAR-16)

Amer Eagle makes both I have no problem getting either at Cabelas! My local shop also carries the Federal XM 193 ball! Not alot but some! I haven't look hard at what Wally is carrying but I do believe it's all.223! My AR actually shoots the XM193 very well as it is a NATO chamber! Just got to swag the pocket before reloading them!

I bought a couple hundred rounds of the PMC X-Tac ammo. It says 5.56 and it says it's shooting the current 62gr. NATO round. Shot fine but it was sure not as hot as some of the other M855 I've shot. Didn't get to chrono it though.
