Is it as loud as regular .22 shot? I have some varmits in the back yard I need to eradicate but I live in town and don't want to get arrested.

I've never heard of rat shot, have you considered a high powered air rifle?

    You need a suppressor.

I'd suggest you get a box of Aquila Super Collibi ammo, uses the fulminate in the rim without gunpowder at about 500FPS with a 20 grain projectile, shot out of a bolt action 22 rifle, you can't hear it go off. I use a Henry Mini Bolt just for this ammo- takes out backyard squirrels up to about 30 yards.:wavey:

Go pawnshopping for a .22 rifle with the longest barrel you can find. Then use .22 Shorts.

Otherwise take up airguns or get good with a slingshot.

Post #6 is where you need to look, much quieter than even a pellet gun. I had dispatched a possum no problem with them. You can mail order from Midwayusa, 20 grain 500 fps are the ones.

Also read the reviews on the Midway site about them. 22 'rat shot' is just about useless except for insects & very close range snakes. A rat would just scurry off wounded at any normal range.

Also I was going to suggest some sub sonic ammo like Wolf MT. I shoot it in the backyard all the time for varmints. You get the pop but no sonic "crack".

I used the .22 shot shells on a beer can for some testing and discovered I had to be about 5 feet away to penetrate a beer can. They were CCI's and not quiet. Sucked IMO. Get a good air rifle like was suggested. Even a Daisy pump up would be better than the .22 shot shells, they also don't cycle well in a semi-auto.

I used to shoot bats in the entry way with rat shot. Not as loud as regular ammo, but not effective past a few feet.

Thank you all for the tips. I would be shooting it out of a Ruger 22/45 pistol. This one to be exact.

I used to use CB caps in my Ruger Mark1. The sound was reasonably quiet.

I'll harken back to the load suggested in post #6. You will have to cycle them by hand in that Ruger though.

Defiantly go with some sub sonic loads as suggested before, I have a ruger MkII with the heavy barrel and it is quiet with subsonic loads. I can hear them go off but doube anyone else knows what it is. Also like sourdough44 stated, you will have to cycle the action by hand, not a big deal if your only shooting a squirell or something.

Rat shot is just about useless. My wife bought some of those CCI blue tip things because she thought they looked cute. The rat shot barely penetrated a can at the muzzle. I also shot at a blackbird with it really close, maybe 6ft, and it didn't even look stunned.
