1/2 Ton 4wd Ext Cab Gas Mpg?

    Need a new truck.....looking at a new 4wd extcab half ton v8 type....what can I expect for the mpg from the big 3....also....whats the best truck for 06..

    Considering a diesel, but not sure if I can justify the extra $10,000 for one.

    opinions wanted...thanks

    Diesel IS where it is at, but they are high! You can expect around 15-17 of actual mpg in a truck. My mom has an '03 Dodge 2wd and she gets about 17mpg. I have an '89 K1500 and I get 10!

    Check out www.fueleconomy.gov and do a search where it says "Find and compare cars" at the top left portion of the page. I have found it to be very accurate.

    I wouldn't expect more than 10-12 city & hiway combined.

    You should average ~15 mpg in most half-ton trucks.

    You can expect 20% greater fuel economy from a diesel. Don't forget to factor in the more expensive 3/4 ton brake jobs, more expensive parts, and more expensive service.

    My cost analysis put the break even point of owning a diesel truck versus a gasoline truck at 7+ years.

    My parents have owned the same Dodge Cummins since 1992. Their truck will often get 20+ mpg on a road trip with the cruise control set at 65 mph. I drive a 3/4ton Dodge with the "Hemi" engine, I can get ~16 mpg average on a road trip with the cruise set at 65 mph. My wife averages 12 mpg around town.

    IMO, if you have something greater then 6000 lbs to tow, then get a diesel. If you do a lot of road trips, get a diesel. If you only have the need for a half-ton, then don't get a diesel. They are a different creature from a gasoline truck, and many people I know who bought them to be cool have had expensive lessons.... like not cooling them down properly and cooking their turbo bearings.

    If the need necessitates the diesel, then get it.

    My reasoning for getting the 3/4 ton, is the solid front 4x4 axle. I've never needed to get an alignment, and my tires are looking good for 44K miles... I'll probably make 60K on 'em.

    I like annoying people.
    I had my mother get a V10 in her F350. She gets 14 MPG (higher then normal) even with a snow plow on. She even gets 12 mpg hauling around a 3 axle 35ft boat. The diesel option was not worth it for her (5G's) and the price of fuel.

    5.3 14 overall w/ 3.73 rear end
    6.0 12 overall w/ 4.10 rear end

    If your considering a 1/2 ton, then you will not need a diesel engine. Those engines are available on 3/4 ton+.

    The half-tons do, but not the 3/4 and 1-tons.. Similar to Fords.

    Take it from someone who knows, IFS sucks! Try to stay away from it if you enjoy or need to do serious offroading. If not then the IFS is ok. You just do not get the flex or articulation from IFS and stock parts tend to break rather quickly. You have to worry about cv boots cracking and allowing water and mud to get in, or cv angles when lifting. If you have no need for a diesel, then do not get it. Check out DieselPower Magazine! Very helpful and cool pics. I got the latest issue.

  11. Just did a fill-up (2.47^9) on my '00 GMC Sierra Z71 extended cab with the 5.3 and it came out to 15.4 mpg.

    Chevy 1/2-tons get the best gas mileage I've noticed. Best I've gotten is 24mpg in my `98 Chevy 1/2-ton ext. cab 2wd with a 5.0 vortec and a 5spd.

    My `99 F150 supercab 4x4 with the 5.4 got around 18 on the hwy, which is pretty good for a 4x4.

    Dodge may be introducing the cylinder on-demand feature on the hemi in their pickups, which should make them competitive with the Chevys.

    I love the Titans, but their average is around 16 for the hwy:frown: .

    Keep in mind that you can easily increase the mpg on any pickup by 2-3 mpg by installing a free-flowing air filter, exhaust, and running full synthetics in the motor and differentials;) .

    Dodge has the cylinder on demand on the new model Ram Hemi and the claiming around 30mpg hiway.
     
  14. I have the Dodge Cummins HO, 6spd, 4x4 and this tank of fuel will be about 21mpg with a lot of a/c miles. Towing long distance 15,000lbs is between 10-11mpg, hard core 4x4ing is around 16mpg and local is about 17.5-18mpg. All these figures include Western mountain grades that have a way of going up and down for miles. :)

    With heated, 8-way power leather seats for both driver and passenger, this is one of the most comfortable vehicles I've ever driven; especially on long distances.
