Anybody drive one? Looking to trade my 01 Nissan Xterra. I'm tired of driving a truck and looking for something fun yet practical that gets decent gas mileage.

    I didn't know they made a 4 door GTI.

My first car was a 1985 GTI, it was about 10 years old when I got it, but damn was it fun to drive. No power steering, so it made it hard to drive it around parking lots. It had lots of electrical problems, and was costing too much for a 17 year old kid to maintain, so it went away.....

I traded my 2001 Ford Lightning for a 2006 VW GTI 2 door. I can park anywhere I want, the handling is amazing, it is fast enough for me although not as fast as the lightning.

I had problems with it when I first got it but it was not the car. It had hail damage the place fixed but did not get everything back on right, causing many headaches.

But now that all the kinks are worked out it is a great car. Excellent gas mileage, fun to drive, and pretty quick.

Plus it has ESP, rotor wipers, headlight washers, cooled glove box and console, and a lot of other overkill additions on it.

Well, the 2 door got car of the year right? The DSG model is about the best trans in the business from what I hear.

I got the DSG tranny. It is very nice, you need to test drive one. The 2007 model I believe got car of the year from somewhere.

I've driven a 2 and a 4 door model. Very nimble handling Reasonably quick, with minimal turbo lag, esp. compared to the 1.8T motor in the last gen VW's. I'm told mileage should come in around 24 average, but you'll be looking at paying for premium. Not a huge deal, but it does hurt to spend more than the smallest number on the pump.

Road noise is louder than I like. And, the ride is definitely "sporty", as in, you'll feel the road, good or bad. I would call it jarring. I could live with it though, and still think it's acceptable, esp. considering the tradeoff is such nimble handling. It would be a fun commuter. I wouldn't want to go long tripping with it though.

VERY nice interior. Way more upscale than any other car in the class.

I think the ride is great, I actually enjoy driving 200 miles from Springfield to St. Louis now to visit my family. I do mainly city driving and average just over 25MPG. Highway is a lot higher.

I just wish I could have got the GTI R32, there will be 5,000 in the US this summer supposdly. AWD V6 250HP. I hear the price is around 32k though, while a GTI is around 25k.

Car and Driver gave the nod to the MazdaSpeed3 over the GTI. I would give that a healty look too, because it's a similar car, with a ton more power for a lot less money.

Yes, indeed. AWD with some added juice. Very nice for the car that it is.

Why not get a Civic Si? It's a blast to drive, as I have an 06. 200 hp 6-spd manual Limited Slip Differential-it handles like it's on rails. lol You can opt for a navigational system for around $21,000 It gets great gas mileage. I average 30 mpg. IMO best bang (no pun intended) for the buck!

For 2007 you can choose between a 2-door or 4-door version of the Si.

My brother just got a 4 door GTI. I love the way the car looks and handles. I say go for it. I will wait about 12 months and get one when I can get a good deal on a used one. You can't beat the versatility of a hatchback.
