Took a quick 10 minute ride on a new Yamaha R6 today.
My next door neighbor picked it up yesterday.
It's definately a race bred bike. Everything on it feels firm, from the suspension to the seat. Just from my quick ride it seems pretty quick for a 600, but it has a very peaky power band all up top. Around town I think my ZX6R 636 has a better motor (and my 10R blows it away), but if you have a place to keep the R6 revved it should be fast.
I tried a little cornering, but didn't push it because of cool temps and new tires. I had the front and rear step out on me a bit but that was due to the tires not being 100% warmed up (my 10R warms tires up very fast, the R6's tires take forever to get up to temp). It was a controlled step out that I brought under control instantly, but still gave me a flutter due to it being a brand new bike belonging to someone else (and he was behind me on my 10R watching me slide both ends of his new bike).
Definately a good looking bike (it's the bumblebee yellow/black), and feels very tight. I'm looking forward to running it against my ZX6R to see how they compare. But I'm not going to ride it again in the twisties until a warmer day with well scuffed in tires.

Yamaha is about to make a buy back offer to '06 R6 owners.
(a little birdie at the local Yamaha shop showed me something).

    Neither here nor there
The new R5 really doesn't do anything for me. I think the 636 is a much better bike and the new GSXR is looking like a good bike.

On a side note, the local stealership got their first '06 ZX-10R in. I wasn't sure if I liked it from the pics I had seen, but in person, it's a great looking bike. It is comfortable too. Seriously thinking about making this my next bike.

Hindsight being 20/20, it would have been fun to buy a R6 a month ago and ragged the dog out of it, just flat out abused it, then sell it back to Yamaha.
Huge honkin wheelies and stoppies, mile long burnouts bouncing off the rev limiter, dragging the pegs off of it.

It may not rev to 17.5k, but its still a cool bike. I'd like to see how long that motor lasts under heavy track use before needing a rebuild.

You have enough time to race it at Daytona before March 15th atleast!
