I got arrested once for DWI for failing the walking the line test. I also told the officer I was not drunk. I'm just glad my blood test also showed I was sober. I think the officer had no clue what he was doing or just being a jerk.
That whole "tip your head back and touch your nose thing" wouldn't work for me. Not one bit. My balance is screwed up from surgeries anyway, I'm not sure I'd even be able to intentionally walk a straight line. Then again, I don't drink and drive, so I'm not too worried about it.

Here in my part of NC any refusal you get arrested for DWI. And you will be prosecuted. A refusal gets you time in jail, stand before the judge. The judge will decide to set bail or not. Your driver's license is pulled.
It sounds like she was found sleeping it off in her car. While that probably won't get her out of the DWI, it's a little different than her cruising around wasted.

Yeah same goes for me. If I ever tipped my head back the whole world would start spinning, I think it's mostly due to my blood pressure med. No way I could 'pass it' if was part of a test.
And I've thought of that if I ever got stopped at a check point or something, I bet anything the cop wouldn't buy my explanation figuring they've heard a phony line like that a thousand times.
I don't ever drive drunk but there have been times when I've had
2-3 beers over a couple hours and I'm driving home. I'd be nowhere near drunk but I suppose there could still be a slight beer breath so they could potentially have me step out.
Got pulled over about 8:30 PM driving home from work.
No alcohol was involved but I was hugging the center line which apparently is a indicator of possible intoxication.
Officer ran through the field tests, thanked me for my cooperation and I was on my way in about 10 minutes.
I am ok with this if it keeps a drunk off the road.
No cartwheels or smart a$$ answers from me although I was tempted to give the the classic answer to I pulled you over for suspicion of DWI ...."why officer is there s fat chick in the back seat"
DRUNKS wake up and many times head North in the southbound lane hit wife and kiddies HEAD-On and kill them - we (cops) didn't arrest or wake up sleeping drunks we just took their car keys from the ignition and threw them into the tall grass over the ditch, big surprise when they heard the birds chirping at 6-30am

As any LEO will attest to, drunks can be very unpredictable...Back in the Day, when the BAT Mobile was first started, we would have drunks moon the camera, women take off their tops for the camera, curse the judge and give him the finger also on camera...gee, I wonder why none of these cases ever went to trial?? hmm
