I currently own a G23 and G43 and carry them both, mostly the G43. Been saving for a .45. Had the money and spent it on a new muzzle loader. Now saving again. I've wanted the G30S for quite some time and always said it'll be my next pistol for sure. Lately though the .357 SIG had really intrigued me. I've never shot one though. From what I've read, ammo is pricey, it's got quite a bit of recoil, and it's loud as hell. However I've also heard it's got an insane amount of power and is very accurate.
Now I'm debating, do I stick with getting the .45 or go in a different direction and go with the .357 SIG?
I would carry this gun IWB in a rotation with my other two guns. And although I appreciate the advice, I'm not much for doing the whole barrel swap thing with my G23.
I have smaller hands but am not recoil sensitive.
Right now I'm slightly leaning towards the G30S because I have a feeling if I get the .357 SIG I'll keep going on about how I need to get the .45. I can't buy both and I also can't buy a new gun every month with my budget.
And to add, if I go with the .45 it WILL be the G30S.
I think what the guy is trying to tell you is save your money, get the 30s, then all you need to do is save a hundred bucks and get a 357 sig barrel from Lone wolf and it should drop right into your Glock 23 and then you can start playing around with the 357 sig caliber and see how you like it.
I will tell you pretty much the same thing. My vote is for getting the 30s. But nothing says you can't get the 30s AND a 357 Sig barrel for your G23 too, because the barrels are only 100 bucks.
I understand what you are saying. I am presuming that at wherever you are it would not be possible to rent both guns at a range to try them first. I am guessing you would not consider buying a barrel for now with the thought of trying it to see if you like it and then selling it before buying the whole gun. Then based on that I am thinking the G30s may be the better choice as I think it would be a bit easier to sell if you end up not liking it.
I think the 45 acp is a great option and easy to find both inexpensive ammo and defensive ammo. I think you will really enjoy the 45 acp and it's the way to go.
Some day if you really get the urge to play with 357 sig I would just buy a barrel and use your 23 for that experience.
I like both calibers for defense and find the 357 sig a very accurate caliber that offers s lot of power in a mid sized package. However it's not that amazingly different than .40 which you allready own. I really have preferred 45 acp and 10 mm after decades of shooting different guns in different platforms.
After I started using .357SIG in a Gen4 G31 five years ago, I benched my 9x19mm, .40SW, and .45ACP weapons except for rare practice with a Mark III Browning High Power in .40SW, a Beretta 92FS, and a Colt Series 80 Mark IV. I converted my 1996 G27 to a G33 that has since been my EDC weapon of choice.
Underwood 125gr. JHP leaves my G31 at 1565 ft/s (680 ft-lbf) and my G33 at 1410 ft/s (552 ft-lbf). I practice typically with Georgia Arms 125gr FMJ at about 200 ft/s lower muzzle velocity.
Glock OEM .357SIG barrels have tight chambers with full chamber support of the cartridge case even above the feed ramp. Glock .45ACP models do not.
I have the 30SF and I carry it ccw IWB and OWB with no problem. Since you haven't bought it yet, may I recommend the Gen 4 30 and use it without the straps which is just about the same as the 30SF but you get the newer model. I'm looking at swapping my 30SF for the Gen 4 30 because I like the way my Gen 4 21 feels without the straps.
Honestly, I'd get the .45 and a .357 Sig barrel. No need in buying a gun you may end up not using, later. .357 Sig feels a lot like .40 S&W. If you shoot softer .45, that will also feel similar. None of them try to rip the gun out of your hand like a G20 with the good stuff does. You could get at least half your money back for the Sig barrel should you choose to sell it and it's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying the whole gun, new, just to take a bigger hit to trade for the .45 you really want. My guess is you'd like the G23 set up for .357 Sig. Just think of it as paying $100 too much for the G30. We've all paid that much, too much, at least once in our life.
I've been carrying a Glock 21SF for years since retiring from LE. Easy shooting weapon and love the big holes, recoil is easily manageable. With Federal HST +P Hollow points at 950 FPS it's all one needs for any situation, knock down big time. I have 2 nephews who carry the G30 and G30SF and both love them. I personally like having 14 rounds readily available.
I also EDC a G 21SF. If I carry a back up it's a G 17. My line of thought is always buy guns ammo will be easy to find on bodies or in houses if OR when the S.H.T.F. 45acp has been carried since 1911. Actually before that. And 9mm is a N.A.T.O round and probably the most common centerfire cartridge. That's just my personal opinion but feel it's a strong line of reasoning
Have you held the models you prefer? What model(s) fit your hand?
Which model suits your purpose, are you just collecting or have a specific need?
I still have a 30s left and had (2) 33's, but I reload and have decided less is more and safequeens can get expensive.
If you have smaller hands the 33/32/31 emulates the 26/19/17 frame.
You will find 45 ammo on the shelf, not so much in the .357 sig, plus what you may find will probably be anemic to buying on line compared to Underwood or the like.
The cost to run either will cut into your budget to become a better shooter compared to the 9mm ammo.
Ps take the money saved to buy ammo for stock and practice.
I have held the 30S several times and it fits great in my hand. Never held any of the .357 SIGs but have previously owned a G26 and G27 (G33 frame comparison) and currently own the G23 (G32) and it fits my hand great also.
And yes I am collecting somewhat but also plan on carrying it.
Although I've said I didn't want to do the barrel thing, after I bought a $100 barrel do I have to do any other changes or will my G23 mags work for .357 sig ammo?
I have had the G41 gen4 and loved it so much, that last week I purchased the G30 gen4. I shot it this week for the first time and in my opinion can't go wrong. I do plan on using it for my EDC IWB, once I make a choice on IWD. just my .02
Me too! although I'm always thinking and looking at different guns I'm a .45 guy. Just got the 30s you'll like it and will be happier with the .45, just my opinion though.

The .357 Sig is an expensive, boutique caliber with limited advantages versus other, more common offerings. Go with the .45.
