I hear you bac! What older Smith? I keep vacillating over the caliber. I currently shoot like 10 calibers now and can't/prefer not to try to keep up with buying ammo in new calibers! I do have a boatload of .22lr that might need to get shot! I could end up as the Southern Texas Ammo Depot!
Secondly, I prefer to buy locally and I haven't seen many pre-lock Smiths around! Admittedly my search has been sporadic as I do have a life!
If you were going for a .357 lever action in/near my price range, what would you suggest? I love the Henry's but not too keen on the tube loading!
Maybe I should just get a stamp and a can and call it a day?
Since it seems you are not looking for another .357 revolver, If it were my $800, I'd probably be looking for a good condition Smith 17 .22lr. I've seen quite a few nice 17-3s in that price range and everybody needs a good .22 revolver.
Otherwise, I'd see if I could find a pre-lock 625 as I do love shooting .45ACP out of an N-frame. On the rare occasion, I've even seen some Model 25-2s pop-up in the $800 range, but never when I have the cash unfortunately.
Another that likes the idea of a lever action. If not in 357 I saw a beautiful Henry yesterday in 17 HMR. Same shop also had a Rhino 357 which intrigues me and would love to shoot.
I don't know how much shooting you do, or what your goal is with another revolver. Having a 7 round 357 is fun. The heavier frame is a lot better for recoil. There are 7 round 586 models. The other option is the Smith and Wesson 22 LR revolver in that price range.
But for $800 if you shoot a lot, then it doesn't hurt to start reloading if you don't already. I love my Dillon 550B which I have for 357 and 38+P, as well as one for 45 ACP. I also have a progressive for 44 Magnum, and I'll start reloading for my 454 Casull on a separate single stage press.
I was looking yesterday. Saw a few lever guns today of. Only one in. 357mag. A marlin with s scope ?
I'm confused as to the availability of .357 in older designs but have they been updated in newer models? Again, I was watching Hickok 45's 1898 Winchester design rebored to .357. While I understand that the .357 wasn't developed until well into the 1900's I believe:
1. Are they still producing these older models?
2. 1Are they updating to newer calibers?
3. What brands/models are available in lever/.357 that I should pay attention to?
I am just trying to gain some quick knowledge and forgive my newbie questions. 'Thanks.
Rossi is the only game in town these days for a new lever .357, good rifles. Used Marlins & Wenchesters go for insane amounts and the last run of Marlins, 9 years ago, were junk
