If you want to put a pistol grip on it, go with the remington. The Mossberg 500's action release lever is near impossible to use with a pistol grip on it.
If you only intend to use a shoulder stock, then get the Mossberg 500. Another plus is the 500 has dual extractors, if that matters to you.
Not sure of Remington sells one, but you can get a 500 combo that comes with an 18.5" barrell and a 28" barrell in the same package.
If I wasn't issued a Remington I would own a Mossberg. Better loading port design, better safety design, better magazine capacity without any headaches and better sights that's Remington's rifle sights.
Do you like Ford or Chevy (or from my Germany days Mercedes or BMW)? Either is a good gun. I personally prefer the Mossberg due to the location of the safety being right under my right thumb. My son has the Maverick version of the Mossberg which has the Remington style safety and his wife has an 870. Hold both, shoot both and decide which is for you. You can not go wrong with either.
As with most decisions between two solid choices - I'd say it depends. Depends on which you're more comfortable with, and feels better to you.
I shoot long guns lefty. Most LH shooters prefer the Mossberg, due to the location of the safety. In my case, I grew up hunting with a Remington 760 that my dad got me. When I was looking at getting a 12 ga. pump, and tried both side by side - I thought that I'd like the Mossberg better, but the 870 actually felt better to me due to my familiarity with the 760. Both are good choices.
I got lucky and bought a very basic 870 about 25 years ago just to have one around. I still have it and from what I read the older production was better than the newer stuff.
Sadly, most gun companies have had crapola periods. I am prejudiced against Mossberg, because I once bought a used single rail Revelation that they made for Sears or Wards. It failed to fully lock up and blew out the bolt and I got a face full of gas. Could have been an eyeball. But the ongoing problem was the cheap plastic safety which would break if it struck any hard object. Hung out at local gun shop and over half of 500 sales came back with busted safeties. Got to where we gave them a couple of spares when they bought the gun. I presume Mossberg got around to fixing the problem.
Sadly, 870 went thru crapola period, but it is still my standard.
According to the old time hymn, "Give Me That Old Time Religion ", a lyric, "If it was good for Paul and Silas, it's good enough for me".
Hence, Remington 870.
