The safety on the DE is the worst thing I've ever encountered on a handgun. It's SUPER stiff and not located in a position where I can easily disengage it while gripping the gun. I know DEs are just a range toy for most people, but I'd still feel more comfortable knowing I could work the safety on it without struggling for several seconds. How do you guys deal with it? And no, "grow longer thumbs" isn't an option. :freak:
I tried growing longer thumbs, but it didn't work. It think ARP's advice is best for those who don't already have one. In your position though, unfortunately the simplest answer is just to practice with it if you really want to make it work.
The older hook style safety, yes. I find the newer style safety uncomfortable. I'm thinking of changing mine out for the old style.
And for the original question, I've had good luck adjusting the engagement on my safety. Remove one of the safety levers, and you will find a teardrop-shaped flat spring with a little bump at one end. Bend this outward a little and reassemble. See the one being held by the pliers in the picture.
I would try adjusting just one side first. If that's not enough then do the other side.
I don't have overly large hands, but I find I can engage and disengage the safety easily, once I did this.
I agree with this 100%. I had to do the same thing on mine. The safety was MISERABLE and practically unusable before I made the adjustment. Now I can actually work it with one hand (still a bit awkward) like I'm supposed to do.
