Has anyone's agency here sent personnel to assist with LEOs up there? Do you know if your dept has been asked for assistance? Apparently ours is sending some. Don't know the details but it's a ways from here. I was surprised considering we are in the deep South.
It sounds like to me you have too many LEO's on your local force.
It would be a good idea to get the names of the LEO's volunteering for this. They just maybe thugs with a badge.
We have not been asked, but that is one detail I would not volunteer for. Too far away from home and the liability if any potential issues arise from action I take is just not clear enough for me be interested.
It's more like, you are going as opposed to volunteers. I'm just surprised this came up at our dept. our guys know nothing about this situation or that area. Way out of our element in my opinion. We did go down for Katrina but this is something we have no business in IMO.
I'm from ND and I've got family in the area where the protests are. Aside from it being in the middle of nowhere, there's not that much going on. The protesters are a bit unruly, but not really violent. The last time they got out of hand the fire department hosed them down and everyone went to the hospital with hypothermia.
Getting paid to stand around and watch idiots? Not a bad gig. Of course, there isn't anything to do out there.
It isn't mandatory. It isn't putting out a sign up sheet either. It's hey, we need you to go do this. For example, the supervisor is asked. Can you spare these 3? We need them to go to N Dakota. I'm sure they could decline but I also know they will not be given details other than go up and they will tell you where you are needed. Heck, maybe it's something behind the lines. I don't know. Just thought it was odd we are getting involved.
North Dakota pipeline ain't no Katrina.
I'll say it again if your local police department can contract cops out to other areas you have too many cops on your force. Reduce the force and save the tax payers some money.
North Dakota pipeline has had it's share of volatile moments. Everything is filmed. Why don't the oil companies with their endless supply of funds hire their own thugs. My guess is they don't want the liability. Make the oil companies do their own dirty work they can afford it.
I would also bet they are pouring a lot of money into the state, county and local governments to keep the fresh supply of LEO's on site. Whenever you have LEO's volunteering to crack the heads of protesters there is going to be trouble.
Around here no one has enough officers. We are constantly helping other depts with major calls and them with us. We have MOUs with them. For major protests, riots, natural disasters you pool resourses from everywhere otherwise the local departments would quickly be overwhelmed.
Don't know. I was just informed this evening so I don't know the details. I was shocked when I was told. I can't imagine this is a situation so bad they need help from 1k miles away. It's not like a hurricane or a natural disaster area.
Folks, I did not create this forum to give people a place to ***** about cops, or to question the morality or legality of their practices. You might have a burning need to do so, but this is not the place for it.
