During my tour of duty at the State Prison, I frequently voiced my concern regarding having only female COs on duty in the housing units which housed newer inmates who had not been vetted yet for permanent assignments.
It appears that a few months ago an inmate decided to pound on one of the females and when the other ran to give her help, the inmate tossed her aside like a rag doll and continued to pound on the original CO. She sustained serious injuries, including a broken eye socket and possible loss of her sight in that eye.
Something like 90% of the serious staff assaults are on females. They need to get a clue.
I remember that during one self defense training session, there was a female CO who could not complete any of the exercises. She was skinny as a rail and a heavy smoker and about 50ish. They let her pass, nevertheless. I suspect she was one of those involved in the altercation. Not sure, though.
People that live in civilized ivory towers are incapable of understanding that there is a segment of society who's hierarchies are determined by physical intimidation and violence.
I worked in juvenile correction. (A camp setting). We had female intern...
Thankfully one of the youth had been brought up right, He landed beat down on youth who attacked her...
He got treated very well for that. He said something about his mother.... So he couldn't stand by.
I just don't understand why a woman would want to do that job. Or any job, for that matter where size and physical strength are needed to keep from getting hurt or killed.
Can easily happen. There are males with insufficient size or too low of a testosterone level.
What can also happen is that some males think of themselves too much as a "gentleman" to hit a female.

Exactly... Some guys, even in this line of work, have a hard time hitting a woman. It's honorable, but could get you killed. I imagine it's probably similar dealing with kids.
One reason why I don't deal with kids or women at work.
I started out my career in corrections at a State prison. They were just then starting to hire females for CO. But then it was little more than for show. They were not allowed to be on the compound unescorted by a male CO, and were not permitted to work the dorms and worked in secure area admin positions.
Fast forward almost forty years and females are working dorms and supervising inmates alone on work details. A few years ago a lone female supervising a work detail working after normal work hours was murdered by two inmates on the detail who then escaped. (Later caught and now on death row).
Could the same thing have happened with a male CO? Sure, but it would be silly to ignore the fact that inmates are typically of a predatory nature and see females as weaker. And therefore easier/safer to take on.
No amount on PC will change the simple physical facts that females lack the upper body muscle mass of even the weakest male.
And please spare me any personal ancedotes about how someone works with or did work with a female that was/is so bad ass.
I tried to get a few female COs to let me help them with some strength training. I told them that if they followed the program they could be as strong as the average untrained male in 4-6 months. None took me up on it.

This is really nothing new. About 40 years ago a big fuss was made in NYC when it was revealed that while many women were applying for jobs with the Fire Department, none were passing the entrance physical fitness exam. So the solution was obvious: lower the standards allowing the stronger women to pass the test. About 30 years ago I started seeing the same stupid political correctness thinking determine policy in the U.S. Army. I doubt things will ever return to sanity when it comes to this issue. I remember when women were first allowed to be in field medical units, and a battalion commander friend of mine complained to his commander that he now needed four soldiers (if they were female) to carry a litter that normally two male soldiers could carry, and that he lacked the manpower to fully meet his mission. He further complained that female ambulance drivers often were incapable of changing a flat tire on an ambulance, requiring him to add a second person to the vehicle (because not allowing women in these roles was not even remotely acceptable to his superiors). For his speaking the truth, he was given a mediocre evaluation report ensuring that he would never get promoted to full Colonel. I doubt that things in the Army have gotten any better in the 26 years since I have retired from active service.

I've worked as a Correctional Officer for over 25 years now and when I started, the female CO's could only work certain posts and most of these were ones where they were not supervising inmates. Over the years that has changed and now they work pretty much everywhere the males do other than the strip out post in the visiting room.
In the time I've worked as a CO, I can only remember a few times that one of the female CO's has been assaulted and that was in the mental health section of the prison where those inmates all have mental problems and they don't care who they assault.
Where I work, we have many female staff that work in positions other than corrections and for the most part, the inmates treat the females with more respect than they do the males.
Because this happened in the 'Peoples' Republic of NY', some here have no knowledge of this.
The woman's family were among our family friends. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donna_Payant
I'm not sure why they would insist on having female correction officers working within close proximity to convicts who spend their time working out, building strength, and constantly probing security for weakness.
I love women, don't get me wrong on this.
No matter who you are, male or female, you must demonstrate mastering X,Y, and Z. If you can't move on. Don't make a set of standards for women and another for men. Women want to be equal, then they have to be. It seems folks forget that all people aren't capable of all things.
I have had several female partners, and all had to get the job done, no points off for you. Only one couldn't really handle it. She just didn't have the strength to move people, between the ears, she was quite capable. Several males that came through had the same problem.
It has always irritated me when sub-standard requirements are put in place to facilitate something that should not be.
I worked in corrections for 8 + years, started in a medium security male facility with a female camp then transferred to a Detention Center, small facility but level 1 through 6. That closed due to cut backs and went back to male facility that was being converted into a female administrative level...
stayed 18 mos more and put in my resignation never looked back... females do not belong in male prisons... I have worked with some very good female officers. They are smart and streetwise but they are no match for a violent male convict... I hated working with female convicts. They would not take NO for your answer. For example, a female inmate asks you if she can leave her orderly job (cleaning the dorm) to go to the commissary and you tell her NO, she will then go to her counsellor and ask them or the unit manager...**** show. With the men... Mr. Officer an I go to commissary before everyone else gets done with work... my reply. NO, you haven't finished all the needed work...convicts reply Okay Mr. Officer, maybe next time ... my reply maybe..We were constantly undermined by liberal staff members and we were told that female inmates needed to be treated differently than the male inmates....never learned that at GLYNCO...essentially male officers in a female prison are paper tigers...female officers in a male prison are victims waiting to happen... corrections is liberalized PC and peoples lives are at stake...
