so... thinking .308 bolt, detachable mag but still OK for hunting. Don't need adjustable cheek weld, and other target stuff.
Bolt guns have moved a lot since I bought my last one, pre accutrigger Savage (ok nothing special).
Saw this:
Thompson Center ICON come and go.. but nice rifles
Mossberg start...
Beretta / Tikka / benelli mash up
Remington fall a lot
Kimber? Read about the 84 never seen one in person
Ruger, do all kinds of things (the 77 international is on my hot list)
Please help me get to the current new gun situation
For a budget gun, Savage is hard to beat.
If you want something really nice, Browning or Sako.
Howa is very under rated.
If you want a very accurate rifle that won’t break the wallet, Tikka.

Howa is plentiful here... they are in my short list list-know their legacy of making nice guns for other brands.. they seemed to upgrade their two stage triggers from what I see...
Two of you (above) mention Sako... and I just looked at the A7 here and it looks good
I've got a couple Sakos, once you get used to them the Remchesterbys just don't measure up. What's a few hundred more over 20 years? You'll sell it for more too.
Was at the range today with my Finnlight 6.5x55 and 1968 Finnbear .30-'06, both shot routine 1" groups with the best being .5" with factory ammo , and I'm no expert.
I'm a Remy person. Got a bunch of them. I no longer own one in .308 as I really got into the 30 cal magnums, but it was a great rifle. Here is a vid of the same one.
Ive been through a few budget rifles for my kids. The best one by far has been the Winchester xpr in .308. Easy sub-inch groups at 100 yards, smooth feeling, great ergonomics and recoil soak. On the upper end, a Weatherby mark V or Sako 85 would be considered. In the middle, Tikka T3 or Browning xbolt. I have a Browning bar shorttrac in .308, and it is very accurate as well. Fun rifle and very reliable.
I previously just replied with a brand and OP asked for more. Here goes. Savage uses a barrel nut to attach the barrel to the receiver. Do some research on that. Instant accuracy, low cost to make. Ruger American and Rem 783 have decided that is a good idea. Their accu-trigger was revolutionary and is now copied by many. Since they were ahead of the field in those areas, they have invested in addressing stock flex. They now have an accustock that includes an aluminum chassis usually found on more expensive rifles.
I'm not someone who just drank the kool-aid and hasn't looked elsewhere. I also own a Rem 783 (basically a copy of an older Savage) and a Browning X-bolt (beautiful gun). But if you want to jump into the game and get the best gun for the money from the folks who are setting the pace rather than catching up - go with Savage.
