Wal-Mart refused to sell me a rifle because......

I cracked the corner of my drivers license while taking them out of my wallet. Yes that is right, a tiny crack in my DL and they refused to sell to me. I know the girl working behind the counter and another employee who called me by my first name when I walked up.
It was just a tiny crack but she said that voided my license and she couldn't sell me the rifle, unbelievable.
I'm glad she didn't sell it to now as I plan to buy a better rifle elsewhere.

I have two valid Texas Drivers Licenses at the moment.
I see what is happening here! The Federal DHS and REAL ID requirements are both already in place in my state (Indiana).

But your state (Texas) and the OP's state (N. Carolina) are among the states that are NOT compliant with this Federal law yet, and are on extension. Florida complies with DNS, but not REAL-ID (hence letting you keep the second ID with a notch).

One is not allowed to posses more than one REAL ID (this is the ID that the DHS, TSA, ATF, etc. will require prior to boarding planes, entering Federal buildings, buying guns, etc., and currently some states like Illinois, Texas, and NC are not compliant with, but they are allowing people to use the old/existing ID's as states move towards compliance, because there would be riots in airport lines if they didn't!).

In short, once Texas gets straight with Uncle Sam on Federal ID requirements, your second ID card will either be revoked (my second ID was revoked many years ago by Indiana as part of this process) or rendered useless (won't be able to use it to get on planes, etc., as only the "Gold Star" REAL-ID's will be accepted by the Feds).

That is also why the folks at WalMart in NC didn't care about the second ID. In Indiana, it is against the law to have a second ID (since we are in compliance with REAL-ID and DHS laws).

In NC it is not against the law to have a second license, as it is not yet compliant with DHS and REAL-ID. But it will happen (original deadline has passed, but extensions to get on an airplane for states in process may be granted until just Jan 2018).

So look at your state-issued ID. If you have a gold star ("stars upon thars", to quote Dr. Seuss's sneetches), you are REAL-ID compliant. If not, your state will be either filing lawsuits, asking for extensions, or taking your second ID's and issuing (just ONE!) DHS compliant ID!

From the Code of Federal Regulations:
§37.29 Prohibition against holding more than one REAL ID card or more than one driver's license.
(a) An individual may hold only one REAL ID card. An individual cannot hold a REAL ID driver's license and a REAL ID identification card simultaneously. Nothing shall preclude an individual from holding a REAL ID card and a non-REAL ID card unless prohibited by his or her State.

Hey thanks. I was wondering what the gold star was for on my new DL. The old one does not have it. It is still valid for a few weeks (until my birthday).

Ccw is a state issue id.

Around here, there's no background check if you have it.
In NC your conceal carry license doesn't have a photo which is needed to buy a firearm. I don't have to do background checks but I do have to produce a valid photo ID and CCL. I was surprised that the girl said WM didn't require a background check with a CCL. I know they did when I worked there.

You're insinuating that because she followed the law she obviously voted for _____? C'mon. You know you want to.
On the flip side, if she had voted for ________ she would have disobeyed the law and let it slide. C'mon. Fill in the blanks.
I agree. Probably something WM enforces on up to state or fed? My DL would be very hard to crack. Could be because most DL's have swipe stripes on the back and a crack on those could make them unreadable? If I thought I was being done wrong I would have a superior come and explain it to me. You probably should have.

It has to be a state issued picture ID. WM also requires a second form of ID that isn't in the law but it is their policy. The second ID can be anything like a utility bill or car registration but the address has to match the picture ID.
Hmmm..well, in Ohio a CCW is a state-issued picture ID. Still, the second ID is a hassle.

I was referring to the part of your response where you said: "I was surprised that the girl said WM didn't require a background check with a CCL. I know they did when I worked there."

That was my understanding as well, and it was all over the media late last year and earlier this year, that even if you had a permit/license to carry, Walmart would still run a background check on you when you made a firearms purchase.

The problem is most Wal-Mart employees don't know what the policy is on this and a lot of other things also. This includes management which are supposed to review the 4473 to make sure everything is filled out. I use to show the manager where to sign when I worked there.

I bought a 10/22 from Walmart 25 years ago. I probably bought more ammo from Walmart than all other brick and mortar stores combined. Most Walmarts here sell long guns. All of the bigger ones sell ammo.
About 20 years back there was an older guy working at my Walmart that actually had some knowledge of firearms! He showed me a book and said I could order anything I wanted out of it. I wish I had ordered a Marlin 44 magnum lever gun.
