The armed student failed to heed the school police officer's commands to drop the knife, and the officer ultimately fired his service weapon, "striking the student and ... stopping the threat," the chief said.
"Once the threat was stopped, the officer immediately began to provide medical aid to the student until emergency medical assistance arrived," Soto said. He refused to take any questions.
No no no, you misunderstand the question. The onus is always on the cop to avoid using lethal force regardless of what the person about to get shot does... :whistling:
Most, if not all of us were asked to consider shooting a teenager/child at some point in our training, most of us giving the standard answer of 'if I have no other choice' and never really considering it may happen. It did for this officer. I hope he recovers.
Could be that officer learned all his skills at the Saturday IDPA matches.....Those match guys, they are the undisputed experts of real life combat shooting to hear some folks tell it...:whistling:
I like how in the news feed I saw on this, the kids that talked to them were backing the officer all the way; they were basically saying " he had a knife, and he said he was gonna stab someone, and then he did, and he got shot" ...with a very matter of fact/what did you expect to happen kind of tone....no snowflakes there, those kids were solid.
We do some things right, especially in the Reno area...
Reno / Sparks are in Washoe County, and last I hear the POST training officer is an ex USPSA GM I believe. Had one of the school police shooting USPSA for a while, and he was no slouch either!
Now if we could just get Vegas to move to Kalifornia...
Something we, or at least I don't know, is at what point would he have begun to be threat to himself. The teen is now recovering. It doesn't always play out that well. Looks like it worked out for the best all the way around.
It's true, you can find humor in all things. This is hilarious. He was just a high school kid, hmmm. A few years ago, I was visiting my mother, out of state. While I was in town, two middle school boys beat their grandmother to death because she wouldn't give them money. Knives don't have safeties on them that prevents anyone under the age of 21 from stabbing someone or otherwise fatally wounding someone. Pepper spray does not stop someone, it discourages them, painfully. Some people can't take "no" for an answer. This boy was behaving erratically, a taser may have just made him mad. A single impulse move could have lead to the death of some standing nearby, if either of these had been attempted. He had already been "talked to". If he didn't comply with a gun pointed at him, he certainly wouldn't comply if they told him he'd been a naughty boy, then threatened to put him in time-out. There are obviously issues at play here, a gun shot to the shoulder may have just been the catalyst to get him some help. A bunch of guys in a dark alley may not have been so kind.
It will take a few minutes for some to make the connection........
