10mm Loading

I've been reloading for over 30yrs, mostly .45ACP and .357 Mag. I have tooled up my Hornady Lock and Load AP for 10mm. I'm going to be working up some 90% loading's using Missouri Bullets 180gr coated RN over 5.8grs of Unique. (.45ACP is 5.4grs under a 230gr RN cast). I like being able to reload all my ammo using the same powders and primers. It makes it simple with just a tool change and powder adjustment. I'm calculating 500rds at $85.00 once I get rolling. (I do .45ACP at about $75.00 per 500rds). If I buy powder in 20lb lots that price will drop. If I go to cast I'm estimating the cost at $80.00 per 500rds. I see where I can get S&B 180 FMJ for $142.50 +shipping or LAX ammo (not sure of about them? have never heard of them?) for $155.00 plus shipping. Have to use some factory ammo for the brass. I have boat loads of .45ACP brass. I have already ordered my KKM Match 4.6" barrel for the cast. For as cheap as I can reload I can get some very good target loads and work up some full power loads. I plan on giving this G20 SF a major work out. If any of you reload, let me know some of your favorite recipes? Thanks

Sounds like you have a good plan. I only load for my centerfire rifles and not my handguns, and I ended up buying 5000 rounds of 10mm when I started shooting that caliber. I'm saving my brass, and may end up loading some 10mm "hunting" loads single stage.

Please keep this thread updated on how this load works for you.

That drives up the price allot. Much more fun to shoot up a bunch then reload it. I usually get 15 reloads from my .45ACP brass before case mouths start to crack. If it's nickel coated it starts cracking after 10-12 reloads. Maybe I'll get lucky at the range and someone will be shooting 10mm who doesn't reload? The guys at the range let me go the brass bucket.

8.1 Ramshot Silhouette with a 180 grain plated, either XTREME or Berrys, bullet.
8.0 should be around 1160 FPS, 8.1 in the ballpark of 1175 FPS.
my carry rounds rated at 1180 FPS, so my reloads mimic what I carry.

for butt kickers, Longshot is pretty good. bottom end of the data puts a 180 over 1220 fps.

I have all my load records in the shop and it is a little too cold a walk at this time in the morning, but off the top of my head, that sounds like about 900fps for those 180 gr slugs, not what I would call "90%" 10mm loads.

More like maybe 70% loads? ;)

A terrific source of reloading data on 10mm is in the "Gun related clubs" section here on Glock Talk. The 10mm reloading threads are packed with real world results from very competent reloaders. Check it out for some good leads on bullet and powder combinations. I hope the link below works, doing this on my iPad.

Years ago I used to reload for the cheap ammo...but with the price of components at a premium I watch the sales for practice ammo and handload high-quality ammo for hunting and self defense (whatever the price).

300 Blackout subsonic gets most of my attention followed by 10mm and 308 for long range.

I never liked scrounging around for other people's brass. They may have left it lay because they have already loaded it a dozen times or even overloaded it.

Also, I found brass from different companies will hold different volumes thus have varying pressures and velocities. So I separate diligently.

I deprime, then tumble, then inspect as I sort head stamps to common lots. Thanks WeeWilly!! I made a typo in the earlier post about 6.0 grains of Unique. Thats for one of my .45ACP loads under a 185gr WC, and for only once fired brass in my Kimber TLE II. I'm checking out the loading data link posted here earlier. Thanks again

I have been loading 8.4 grains of power pistol under 180 grn Xtreme FL bullets. (I use the same load for Sierra 180 grn JHP) Are your bullets true round nose or are they flat points with rounded shoulders (That's what I shoot. I fear a true RN bullet may hamper your COAL measurements.

When powder was hard to get I was reloading that same bullet with 7.0 grains of Unique. It ran 1128 fps out of my G20 with a LW barrel. I would consider that about 75-80 percent. Shot real good in my Glocks and 1911's. I prefer Blue Dot for the 10mm though when/if available. Also use Longshot and Power Pistol quite a bit.

I went and dug up my 10mm records.

Unfortunately for Unique, the lowest I have was 7.6gr of Unique under an 180gr FMJ. That clocked in at 1105fps out of my stock G20. 7.8gr came in at 1131fps with really good SD's-9fps, 8.0gr was 1155fps, 8.2gr 1184fps. all loaded to 1.260".

If you want to try a few other powders, let me know, I have tested most of them that are applicable at one time or another.

I have an accurate, warm but pleasant load of 9.0 of Longshot over a Hornady 180 XTP or HAP.
I chronoed these from my G29, everything stock except recoil spring and got 1174 fps.
I sold my G29 and now have a G40 MOS but have not chronoed it yet.
