Missing/Stolen Winchester 1886 Rifle

An elderly friend of mine has discovered that a Winchester 1886 has gone missing from her house. Unfortunately, this is one of those difficult cases because of the long time-frame, but I have offered to do what I can on the various forums that I am on.

The rifle is a Winchester Model 1886 in .45-90, serial number 78164. It's been a few years since I saw it, but my memory is that the metal was in fairly decent condition, but the finish (varnish?) on the stock was somewhat "bubbled". It has an octagonal barrel and a crescent butt-plate (I can't remember which version).

The unfortunate part is that she doesn't know when it went missing. It could have been as long as two years ago. It may have been someone she entrusted with her firearms for awhile. I would think that anyone who would take this kind of firearm would try to sell it.

This happened in the Mid-Willamette Valley area of Oregon. The most likely places for someone to sell it would be Corvallis, Philomath, Albany or Lebanon.

I am asking that anyone who has any information about this rifle please contact Deputy Jerry Williams of the Benton County Sheriff's Office: jerry.l.williams@co.benton.or.us with reference to case # 16B 4983.

Thanks!

That's sad. Hope she finds it safe and sound.

Serious question - are you sure the gun is gone? It may be in the house still and is probably worth a thorough check. The elderly folks I have had the pleasure of knowing (and I am becoming one) are pretty famous for misplacing things and then not remembering.

No offense intended here, but this is a real possibility.

I hope she finds it. I understand how much the loss can hurt.

I had a Model 1886 Winchester in .33 caliber. It was a mechanical marvel in smoothness and finesse. I really loved that gun. It was a gift from my father, who got it from a couple of Mormons from SLC.

While I was in the Navy, my sister gave it away to one of her "boyfriends", who promptly traded it to the LGS for a cheap piece of crap in .30-30 caliber. I haven't spoken to my sister since.

I'd be curious too and probably ask the same questions, however, out of respect for my friend's privacy, I will not be providing any other details about why we know for sure that it is in fact missing or our suspicions about what happened to it. Thanks!

If you have a Gun Broker account you can do a saved search for Winchester 1886 in 45-90. Not many there and even the new reproduction 1886 that Winchester made a few years ago is asking $2350. The cheapest one. The originals go for way more.

Cost you nothing and worth as shot.
