just got home from a 10hr ride along with my local police department- I have a new appreciation for what these guys do.
I head about it but after seeing it first hand.. I am very impressed. Social worker, negotiator, easy stuff and very badass when they need to be.
Evidently many others do too because I head it several times tonight.
The things you see and hear so far removed from my own (your own) daily reality... why, it's like another world of chaos and lies and altered reality (is everyone drunk or stoned?) altogether.
...and you're with Someone and watch as they take command of the little situations that crop up or dust off or get active on...
Except for DV calls. When I did mine here in LV, they told us those were just too much heated dynamic and we could not be a part of... understood and gladly noted. Bad juju from time to time, those.
A whole new level of respect. For those that want to know and care.
3 DV's, 2 traffic stops, one OD, 2 fights, one trip to jail, one very fast lights / siren ride and a few other bits of adventure.. the backup / team work is amazing
I would love to see it mandatory for all journalism students to have to ride along on the mean streets for a week or two as part of their curriculum. I think we could start chipping away at that 98% dem voting rate for journalists.
A ride along in Southern California is what cemented me into my career choice.
Your commitment to educate first hand speaks volumes to your character. You took a mere 10 hours of your life and learned more about policing and how nasty the real world is. You learned more about people in those 10 hours than you ever learn by reading any book.
People many times think cops have a 6th sense. Research has shown it's not an extra sensory improvement, cops are simply experts in human behavior. I'm sure you can now understand why.
Thank you for educating yourself. Tell people of your experience. Better yet, tell them to ride too.

Great post. Locally we have done away with ride along unless it is someone enrolled in BLET, officer from another agency, or member of city council. I really wish it would come back so more could see up close what goes on locally on any given day. If enough did that I honestly feel pressure would cause the council to give us all raises.
I am still trying to process heading towards a report of multiple gunshots at a high rate of speed and I am unarmed.. it is contrary to everything I have learned and my training. The vest did not make time feel any better. I guess I will get over it
as I said, that takes a big set of stones
