Scope Mounts

I've never bought/used a magnified optic/scope on my AR15s, but I'm all set to get into a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24.

So, I started looking at mounts.

Jesus H. Christo, but some of them are expensive!!!! A basic set of 30MM rings can be $200.00 and more, and a cantilevered mount can start at $140.00

Now, one good thing is that I have a Geissele SMR rail system that is rock solid, so a cantilevered mount isn't necessary (I think??), and I'd like to mount it low, to minimize POA/POI changes at different ranges.

Please school me on mounts; will any ol' 30MM mount(s)/rings work? Are there low-profile cantilevered mounts for AR15s?

****....now I see there are different offsets for cantilevered scope mounts. How do I know which one is right?

While we wait for an expert to answer your question, I'd think the mount mainly needs to securely put the center of the scope where you want it to be.

The reason for complicated mounts is to:
1. Have the center of the scope where you want it, and the correct distance away from your eye.
2. Securely attach the scope to the gun.

I'd go with the simplest mount that achieve that :)

Great scope choice. One of my AR's has one and I love it.

The primary reason for 1-pc cantilevered mounts is simple. With the scope positioned for the correct eye relief, you would end up with the front ring on the handguard. Some people don't mind doing this, but I've never been a fan of one ring on the receiver and one on the handguard. IMO, it's best for the entire scope mount to be on the receiver.

In my experience, a 2" forward offset is ideal for almost any AR and scope combination. And you'll want the centerline of the bore of the rings to be around 1.5" from the top of the receiver. That will yield the best results for a typical AR-15.

If you want to be able to switch between a scope and hard sights, I'd recommend a Larue or ADM Recon mount. Both re-zero perfectly between uninstalling and reinstalling. They aren't cheap, but they are very nice mounts.

If you plan to install it once and leave it on there, I've had good experiences with the Burris PEPR and the Aero SPR. Either of these will be under $100.

FWIW, I always like to peruse the offerings at MidwayUSA.com and see what reviews people have posted. I have found that popular opinion is a pretty good indicator for what will probably work for me, even though I am tight fisted with my money, I usually never want " the very best" or the cheapest. I also like companies with good customer service. I'm not an Operator, just an ordinary American guy. In my life I have learned to trust Weaver and Leupold products, but also have found satisfaction from some Tasco 22 mounts. YMMV...

If you are shopping the expensive ones, they will be expensive. There is no reason they have to be. It's a piece of metal, threaded for a few screws.

I currently need a mount for my Nikon P-223, but it won't cost over $50.
