A son and I went to the range yesterday. We brought with us a new DPMS Panther Arms A-15 Carbine 16 Flat Top and a Smith and Wesson M&P9.
I am sad to report the Carbine 16 was flawless, the commercial stock tube, much lamented bolt and much lamented trigger did not prevent us from excellent and reliable accuracy at 25 yards using Federal/ATK 55 grain 5.56 ammo. The weapon is a pleasure to shoot.
Equally as disturbing, the much lamented trigger of the M&P9 did not prevent us from excellent and reliable accuracy at 7 and 10 yards with PMC 115 grain FMJ fodder.
Both guns are decent weapons and will perform just fine in a self defense scenario, sadly. I know this will be a let down and I apologize in advance.
Thanks Don: I'm not staying they're par excellence but they get the job done. The average neophyte getting into the world of firearms would be well served by either. I prefer shooting Glocks and carry a Glock 23 Gen. 3 but I am not disappointed I bought the DPMS and the M&P9.
I had so many tell me not to get a DPMS---the triggers suck and the bolt assembly sucks. Then I was told the trigger on the M&P9 was rubbish. You know what? Neither weapon is spectacular but both are acceptable. It just goes to show you the Internet dog piling is not always accurate.
Nice report!
There are so many gear snobs that muddy the waters-
Just yesterday went to a match and came home with some prize money. Unlike many others present I did not have the latest ranger delta seal dea FBI gear rig, and my rifle was a ban era style 20" rifle with fixed stock. But getting on demand 100plus hits on target in under two seconds offhand with iron sights ( my fixed carry handle no optics rifle was looked upon as an Antigua by some) suggests that simple bushmaster was up to the task.
I was into AR's back when there were only a few makers compared to today's dozens. Some of those 1990 era guns are still running and getting it done.
Glock fans trashing the triggers of nearly anything else made this side of an Arrow electric stapler is freaking comical.
Glock, M&P, whatever that is striker fired—the suck in the trigger is a byproduct of that design choice. Then the various fanboys are reduced to arguing the relativity of the trigger suckage after that point.
Agreed. I keep my life simple but to me one of the late great Jim Clark's custom 1911's had the best trigger I've ever experienced. As far as a self defense weapon, I'm not looking for Jim Clark excellence in a Glock, M&P, HK or XD variant. I just want it to work.
Glad you had a good time with the new toys. I have an entry level Bushmaster and a pretty high end LMT. Do I like shooting the LMT better? Yes. Has the Bushmaster ever let me down? Nope.

I really wanted to like the M&P as I liked everything about it. But when I rented one and tried it, I was all over the paper at 7 yards. I was very disappointed. Glad you liked it though.
If the gun shoots well, that's all that matters. I remember people said Taurus was not good. Well I owned a PT99 AFS stainless and it shot and performed well enough for years. I sent it in for some warranty work and the Taurus lifetime warranty covered the repairs and shipping back to me. I owned it for over 20 years. Enjoy your new guns and be safe.
You buy it/them knowing full well the internet POS reputation, expecting issues, HOPING for issues... then... nada.
Just bangbangbang over and over. Holes in targets where you want them.
BORING!
Ya know?
What do these words actually mean again? Reliable, flawless, excellent, a PLEASURE? (I don't think they mean what you think they mean, but I dunno for sure)
An interesting take on range reporting and photo essay of two worthless weapons. Thank you for sharing Will...

Sometimes good enough is good enough. Obviously the DPMS and M&P are good enough.
Speaking of good enough, I dug my HS2000 out this weekend and ran it through some drills. You may know it as the XD9 but I have the first generation pistol imported 2000-2001, before Springfield Armory bought the rights to them. That pistol has gone through cases and cases of ammo and still runs like a top. Been a few years since I shoot it but apparently it is still good enough.
Very creative intro my friend. I'm certain you had a lot of us fooled. Glad to hear you had fun.
