Which Springs are These? Wilson Combat Magazine

I was cleaning mags in preparation of going to the range with a new to me Kimber Custom tle. This is my first 1911 which I purchased used from a coworker. It came with an unknown round count and an assortment of magazines. 5 of the mags are Wilson Combat. 2 out of the 5 have a shorter spring and I can only load 7 rds in them. The others have the longer spring and easily load 8.

On the two mags that have shorter springs, the followers have been damaged and they catch on the magazine. Is is a coincidence or is this a known issue with magazines that are setup like this? The mags with a longer spring load/cycle correctly.

I found this page, https://www.trippresearch.com/store/store_1911.html , but I could not find a part number of the magazines that matched, so I am unsure what to order to fix the mags.

Also, on my first trip to the range I was had two magazines that caused feeding issues. The round would feed into the top of the barrel at a sharp angle, causing the round not to chamber. I was shooting 230gr rn reloads, which are tailored to my g41. All check my rounds with a Dillon case gauge but am wondering if I need to look into a potential oal length change on my reloads, or if it is most likely a mag issue.

Thanks,
Alex

Call and order new springs. Last time I asked, the mag springs made for Wilson 47 mags were proprietary by design and manufacture, and could only be ordered through Wilson (who bought them through a major spring maker, and I spoke to the spring maker).

I stopped using Wilson mags many years ago after I tired of replacing weakened springs and damaged plastic parts so frequently. The soft nylon followers and the butt plates were parts that required replacement as they became worn/damaged.

After having tried and used more makes/models of 1911 magazines than I'll ever be able to remember (since the early 70's), I've long since standardized on Tripp and ACT-MAG (the version marketed by Wolff, using their Extra-Power springs, or the ones shipped by S&W with my '05 SW1911Sc, but with the standard springs eventually replaced with the Wolff springs). I have some other currently made magazines, too, but QC issues cropped up and reduced my dependence on them several years ago.

Like pistols, there's probably bound to be an Achilles' Heel with just about any design of magazine, if only in the service life of the parts of the magazine assembly over time and use.

Your other option is to get a return auth from Wilson combat- they have a solid warranty and when mine stop running I send them back for replacement no questions asked.
1911's mags are critical to proper function- if the mag doesn't work scrap it and get new. Messing with replacing springs and trouble shooting them is a not worth the trouble
