Well, it should be an easy build. A complete PSA classic lower is enroute as I write. Not a bad deal at $149. A complete upper will follow as the budget allows. I'm going as low cost as possible so I'm leaning toward an A2 type front sight and "classic" handguard instead of a free float upper. That means a rear sight of some kind. I've considered Magpul BUIS as well as the "classic" carry handle, to complete the retro look. I've also seen a sight by Ozark Armament that looks like the rear end of a carry handle minus the handle part (sorry, no pic). Currently $19.95 on Amazon. Looks like two knobs for easy elevation and windage adjustment. I'm obviously a total noob on some of these things; any advice/guidance is appreciated. The gun is intended for defense, not long range tack driving.
Not sure a complete upper and complete lower meet the definition of “build”. But, yeah, it’ll be easy.
No offense intended. At that price, why not get the complete lower.
The Ozark Armament rear sight is probably going to be crap. I would go with Magpul BUIS.
Good luck and keep us posted.

I concede your point about "build". I'm an admitted cheapskate. Using PSA as an example, I've seen a stripped lower for $80 and lower parts kit with stock at $100. That's $30 more than the complete lower I just bought. I'm going for as low cost as possible without getting junk that will cost more to replace. I'll pass up the fun of installing small parts.
Don't buy a cheap-o rear sight. I have done it more than once. They often won't hold zero or give you good clicks to adjust.
If you want to get a pretty good rear sight cheap, go for a Ruger RDS (Rapid Deployment Sight). You can find them for $30 and the ones I have seem to be at least as good as Magpul.
I'd vote against the pop up sights. No real advantage since you already have the fixed front sight base. Just buy a Daniel Defense fixed rear sight and call it good. About the same price as the Magpul backups. If you ever go with a red dot the Daniel Defense will easily co-witness with the optics...

With a red dot and a lower third co-witness you barely notice it. I have most of my red dot equipped rifles set up this way and its no problem whatsoever. Same for the front sight...
Tried to link image but I can't quite figure it out (and my kids aren't here). Found a UTG model 4/16 rear sight on Amazon. Also found some online reviews that are mostly favorable. I seriously doubt I'll use a red dot optic in the near future, and a fixed sight appeals to me more than a flip up unit. Anyone familiar with these?
By the way, the PSA lower arrived today. Phase one complete.
I have a Leapers UTG PRO mil-spec 7075T6 forged carry handle that seems to be just as good as any other I've used. On sale at Optics planet for $64 and free shipping, plus they usually have a 5% or 10% off code available too.
You will be happy with anything from PSA. Quality at a lower cost. My Freedom upper is pretty nice. I have not shot my AR yet since I just finished it and have not had any time to test it out and zero it. I have the Magpul BUIS and it is good quality not great but will do the job needed, back up sight. I plan on a red dot but if are going to just rock iron sights the DD A1.5 sight is very nice and fixed or a good carry handle sight. PSA has carry handles for cheap.
The products are good, their business practices and whom they hire is scandalous. Do a google search for "troy industries poor hiring practices". They have employed some that many feel have betrayed America.
While I have owned Troy products in the past, I own none at the moment and will never again.
You'll be happy to know you swayed me. Replacements are on the way for all my Troy stuff except for one handguard that I just can't realistically replace.
Switching slightly to uppers, specifically barrel finishes. I'm leaning toward melonite finish rather than chrome lining or stainless barrels. Is there any difference between melonite and nitride barrels? Are they the same thing with different names?
No melonite and nitride are different. Melonite proveds corrosion protection as well and hardens the surface that is treated. The end result is a slick, hard corrosion resistant barrel. Nitride is just a corrosion resistant finish also known as parkerizing. Melonite IMO is better than chrome lining.
Simple google search will give you all the info on melonite treatment. Research and decide for yourself. Nitride and melonite are not the same though. Melonite on the left nitride/ parkerized on the right.
Nitride is not the same as parkerizing. Most people do use melonite and nitride pretty much interchangeably. As you said, a simple search will show you that.
