I am slowly doing some upgrades and modifications to this Ithaca Deerslayer III. It has a parkerized bull barrel now and a laminated stock. I intend to add an extended magazine and a Trijicon 1-4X24 AccuPower scope with an illuminated MOA Crosshair reticle on it. That will allow me to make a range card with the impact zeros of the different slugs I intend to use in it.

I know some may question why I would do what I am choosing this gun to modify so I will explain.

It already had a custom tuned trigger and a heavy screwed in fully rifled barrel matted to a proven steel Ithaca action. I was not looking for a general carry shotgun but more of a limited carry shotgun that had short to medium range reach while maintain the ability to double in a since as a stopping weapon if needed with the right ammunition. This shotgun with the right ammo has 200 yard reach and the power to put a grizzly on his nose at point blank range again with the proper ammunition. It is hard to find that type of versatility out of one weapon. Tha is why I indent to mate it with a Trijicon 1-4X24 AccuPower with an illuminated MOA Crosshair reticle. That will allow both eyes open aiming at 1X for close in work even at extreme low light. With the MOA feature and more light as well as rage the use of a different load like the Winchester Supreme Partition Gold Sabot Slug allows for hits at 200 yards.

It's a first generation Ithaca Deerslayer III from the Original Ithaca Company out of New YorK.
Here is a pic of the muzzle to give you an idea of the nature of the bull barrel thickness not found on the newer models. Below that is an enlarged pic of the Dixie IXL-DGS Dangerous Game Slug. I checked with the factory to make sure the Dixie IXL-DGS would work with the older model Ithaca I have and it will but not the newer models as the bore diameters do not match. My Older DeerSlayer III from the Original Ithaca Company is made with a 3" barrel with a .729 bore. Dixie's Dixie IXL-DGS Dangerous Game Slug this ammo is to be used only in smoothbore barrels that have a 12 gauge 3”- .729”/.730” bore with Cylinder Chokes or in 12 Gauge 3” Rifled Barrels. So I am good to go; factory verified!

Dixie IXL-DGS slug was designed for dangerous game defense use in emergency situations. This massive hard cast, heat treated, .73 caliber 870 grain slug moving out a 1200 feet per second is the most powerful and penetrating commercially loaded dangerous game ammo ever produced for shotguns. Out of my shotgun it is going right at 1300fps.

The Alaskan guides who asked for this ammo, wanted a heavy, hard alloy, high penetration slug that was usable in their existing short barreled cylinder bore Remington 870 defense guns. This meant the slug had to be stable without benefit of rifling at ranges under 50 yards. To get short range accuracy in a smoothbore with a solid hard cast slug requires a close fit between slug and barrel. This close fit necessarily means some smoothbore shotguns may have barrel dimensions that are not compatible with the hard alloy Dixie IXL-DGS slug ammunition.

In recognition of this need for a close barrel fit and the hard, solid construction of the IXL-DGS, Dixie Slugs requires a signed statement on the IXL-DGS order form. So idiots that don't read the fine bold print don't blow themselves up along with their guns trying to force a round peg into a square hole so to speak. These slugs basically are non-expanding huge .73 caliber 870 grain "bullets" made to smash through heavy muscle and bone for extreme penetration in a straight line on as the name says Dangerous Game. As in something big mean hairy and will kill you if you give it half a chance. It is designed for 50 yards and in as a stopping round. One thread here spoke about such a slug and this is my personal nominee. It does not have the most velocity, or most energy, but it is made not to expand and to keep going where you aimed it. Now for those in a gunfight that understand the difference between cover and concealment when we are speaking about automobiles and add this ammo into the equation you may see some options. Unless you know how to use the motorblock as your best friend this slug will leave anyone using anything including a semi-truck naked as the day they were born. It's penetration has has been tested as equal to a .416 Mag using Nosler Partitions; need I say more? Be it be behind a brick wall next to a window, a cinder block structure, or a y rated "bullet proof" vest I don't think you want to take a hit from this slug. To reach out to 200 yards the Winchester Supreme Partition Gold 12 Gauge 3" 385 Grain Sabot Slug at 1850 FPS works very well out of this slug gun.

When something other than a slug is needed and due to a fully rifled barrel the Dixie Tri-Ball (is the way to go) and the equivalent weight of 00B...sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. Dixie Tri-Ball 3” vs. Winchester Super X #00 - http://www.dixieslugs.com/images/Dixie_Triball_vs.pdf

These are heat treated .60 caliber balls, 315.00 grains each, 1100 FPS out of a 20" barrel Dixie-Tri Ball 3".

Disclaimer: I have no connection with Dixie Slugs other than just liking their products. My name is Rocky Latham and I live in Landers, CA. Feel free to check with Dixie if you wish!
