I used to own a Glock 26 and foolishly sold it years ago, and now thinking of getting another Glock. I just wanted to hear the experiences of members here on whether they prefer the Gen 3 or Gen 4 and why or why not.
I used to be partial to the Gen 3 guns because I don't like the texture Gen 4 of the grip, the polymids, nor the removable backstrap deal, and because I read about problems with the Gen 4's, but now I'm reading that Gen 2's and Gen 3's had problems too.
So anyway, I just wanted to read why members prefer or do not prefer the 3rd or 4th generation Glocks.
I intend to buy a 9mm if that helps.
Also I did do a search for this topic but didn't really find a good thread, so if anyone just wants to post a link to a thread that already covers this, that's fine too, but many of us enjoy interacting on this site, so feel free to once again add your opinions. Thank you.
Besides my G19 all my Glocks are Gen4 and I prefer the larger magazine release. Whenever I pick up a G20/21 I think I'm going to get the Gen3 SF just to have an SF, but other than that all my future Glock purchases will be Gen4s.
I have no preference and like both. Own an equal amount of both versions (all 9mm) and put the medium back strap on the Gen4. As you all know this is effectively the same as Gen3.
The two versions offset each other because I like the large mag release on the Gen4 but the trigger on the Gen3. The grip treatment on the Gen4 has no bearing on my decision process.
Rent/borrow both Gen3 and Gen4 models. Go to the range and shoot one box through each pistol. Do this during the same outing. That should make your decision somewhat easier. Weapons feel different "dry firing" in the gun store than under actual field conditions.
Some ranges credit your rental fee towards your purchase.

I love my Glock 19 Gen 3. On the left coast you have to pay premium for Gen 4 and I like the Gen 3 so much even if the price were the same I'll go with Gen 3.
Doesn't really matter which generation, 3 or 4, they both cost the same and both come with 3 standard capacity magazines. Only thing that would matter to me is if one had the better finish, then that's the one I would buy because my flat grayish ones haven't held up well to holster wear.
If I could choose and order directly from Glock it would be a generation 3 RTF2 with gills and the better finish.

I'm not a fan of the Gen 4 because the only real improvement that needed to be made wasn't made, the finger grooves weren't removed. The Gen 3 fits my hand so I don't need adjustments, I am right handed so I will not need a left handed gun, don't like the Gen 4 grip texture, to many reports of rust or finish coming off, larger mag release increases the chance of accidental mag release under stressful conditions and the .40/357 Sig barrel swap is simpler with a Gen 3.
Even though I dislike the "new" finish compared to the old "teflon" coating, I much prefer the backstrap and the mag release on the Gen4.
