What are my best options? isp is century link and right now I'm using their actiontec Q1000 as a modem only, paired with a router. Q1000 is lacking on the router end and it's leased, that's why I'm using as modem only.
Is there a good quality modem router I should be looking at?
I'm just not a fan of router/modem combos. Invariably, from what I've experienced, the router side always lacks features that I want... I assume this is because the manufacturers assume people going w/ combo units just want to plug and play w/ little fuss.
Seems like there are some incompatibility issues with certain providers for the modem side. Very possible I'm over complicating it. I'm looking for guidance on a compatible modem with my isp. I'm planning on duplicating this on a business venture as well.
If you already have the ActionTec Q1000 in "bridge" mode and are using a separate router then what difference does it make to replace it with a different modem/router? If the router is missing features then just replace it with a more capable router. Its what many people do. Put the ISP equipment into bridge mode and run their own router behind it.

the two should be separate devices since the router also acts as a firewall, and the modem is simply the gateway to the internet. if you have DSL services, you're most likely locked into their hardware for that part. If it's cable modem, then you can get your own... just make sure it's a DOCSIS 3.0 or better. As far as the router is concerned, Asus makes a seriously good one with awesome coverage and range. it's a 1900 something something... I got one from Tmobile to extend phone range in my house
Find out from them what they approve for their network and choose from that list. Failure to do so and they will blame every internet problem on the modem you have. I can't make a specific recommendation because I am not familiar with them. Good luck!
Now I'm trying to configure so I can access the modem gui. My understanding is the modem and router share the same ip address. If I change the router ip, what else would need changed in order to do so?
edit: Changed router ip, but lost internet access. Still able to login in to the router, but not modem. Reverted back to original router ip internet comes back.
The modem uses your internet "public" IP address. Private IP addresses are on your internal network LAN - 192.168.xxx.xxx or 10.0.xxx.xxx typically. You might check your router configuration to see what default gateway IP it is using in it's internet/public IP configuration (not what iand try using that to access the modem. Modem is probably password protected too.
You could also try connecting laptop directly to modem to see if you can get internet access and if you can use the default gateway shown on the PC to access the modem. For a Windows PC run the command ipconfig to find default gateway. You may need to reboot laptop/PC after connecting to different network to get proper IP address via DHCP assignment.
Got it. Had to set up a static ip on the laptop connecting to the modem to get to admin page.
