Not sure if it's on the "rosters" of legal to buy guns in CA or MD. It might be, but it's worth looking into, as these two states (and possibly others) have lists of pistols that are okay to buy.
Being on or off the Safe Handgun Roster has nothing to do with legality. It is perfectly legal for anyone in CA to own a gun that is not on the CA Safe Handgun Roster. It is just illegal for a dealer to sell a gun not on that roster to a non-exempt person (that is, non-LE, etc.)
Say what you want about Floriduh, but I think we do have great gun laws here. I just bought a G30S at my LGS six months ago. The whole process took 15 minutes.

Is it safe to assume then I would only have to be concerned with magazine capacity if I were to ever move or travel to one of the non gun friendly areas?

There is a whole lot going on in the semi-automatic long gun area law wise, thing are changing very rapidly, if you honestly plan to relocate and you own any of these kinds of toys, definitely logon to Calgun.net and start trying to learn, the ever changing maze that is CA firearms laws makes Alice in Wonderland seem quite sane.
Handguns that are not on the Safe Handgun Roster can be brought in with you, sold PPT (face to face at an FFL), generally for a premium to a similar gun on the roster. For instance, no Gen 4 guns conform to CA's Safe Handgun Roster, so they generally command a premium over a similar model Gen 3. Guns like the G43 can command sometimes quite steep premiums, as do many semi custom 1911's, etc. It basically is the only way a non-exempt resident in CA can obtain a non-roster gun.
CA is flooding the zone with new laws each session. Things like background checks for ammo purchase, limiting ammo purchases to face to face (no online sales with UPS delivery, etc.). There are a majority of CA residents that want guns gone, in the end, they will prevail I believe.
I own a Glock 30G3 for years now in the great state of Hawaii. One of my favorite guns to shoot.
