People didn't start knocking Colt until you called the far superior Dan Wesson just a copy.
People that want high quality 1911s don't want Colt and don't give a damn that the ancient predecessor with the same name as today's company built the first model.
If today's Colt 1911s were high quality and could compete with the best, I'd be all for them. As it stands, hell no.

I do agree with fnfalman in that Colt has made a lot of crappy revolvers. They made some nice stuff pre-WWII and the Python after that, but there were a lot of duds.
What's ironic is we had a thread specifically for the fan boys to duke it out, and that got shut down. Instead, we now have someone's Dan Wesson thread getting poo poo'd on. :arg:
It is easy to be a good sport since the contrarian person had never shot a high end production piece like a DW or a higher-end custom piece like a Baer, Brown, Wilson etc.
Congrats on a fine purchase Green Dragoon. My local dealer has begun to stock more of the DW offerings recently. The Valkyrie Commander was especially nice to me. I'm probably stuck with my current pair of "copies" for now. If I'm ever looking to make a step up, a DW will be high on the list.
Thanks for being a good sport about the massive thread drift. It was quite entertaining.
Every post you make proves my point and you just don't get it. It is fine.....really is. You admire the brand. That is ok. It really is. You think Colt invented the 1911 too. That is fine....I will lose no sleep over that.
However, you have little experience with the 1911 and that is flagrant.
How much experience is good enough? I shot the gun in 1984 as part of military experience. I became a US Army armorer in 1986 and maintained 50 of these in my arms room.
i must admit that I don't know much on how to do golf ball checkering or tightening up frame to slide fitment.
Yup. When you call non-colts "toys". Come on.....you DO know this is your angle and it is frivolous nonsense. That is why I enjoy it, because it is a game and sport. To say otherwise would paint you to be .......
You might have a point if the definition of boutique also included high quality.
A boutique or dress shop is "a small store that sells stylish clothing, jewelry, or other usually expensive things".[1] The word is French for "shop", which derives ultimately from the Greekἀποθήκη (apothēkē) or "storehouse".[2][3]
Some prefer a finer front strap checkering. CNC machining can only go to about 20 grade, when Les Baer hand cuts 30 grade, that isn't just about style.
Colt is in bad shape for the same reason H&K is (was) in bad shape... overcharging the civilian market because their government contracts paid so well that the civilian market was kind of an afterthought.
Colt can charge $1,000 bucks all they want, people will happily pass right by them to buy an entry level STI or an SR1911 for several hundred dollars less.
H&K kind of saw the light and came out with the VP series to have a lower priced option for civilians. Will Colt drop their GI model to $700? Doubt it.

While I disagree with a lot of what you say on this topic, IMO the Baer slide to frame fit is a bit of hype. In my particular incident it seems once I broke it in / wore off the high spots, it now has a very loose slide to frame fit. However, the gun is still extremely accurate, as the barrel lockup is still tight - which is much more important than the slide to frame fit.
My newer Colt Gold Cup isn't as accurate as my 1996 Baer. This is from an NRA magazine article on 1911 tight vs. loose:
"When 1911 parts are fitted quickly and cheaply, it tends to result in a loose fit that allows the parts to batter each other during recoil. The more battering these parts incur, the more quickly they wear out, resulting in declining reliability and accuracy. Custom level firearms like Les Baer, hand fit by a skilled gunsmith, posses parts with tight interfaces that function reliably and accurately."
A run of the mill Colt 1911 extremely accurate? I guess that depends on your definition of extremely accurate, but I think not. They are average at best in 1911 terms.
Not to knock Colt, but are they still burden by their employee union, the UAW? I can remember when all their boxes came with that UAW Made printed on the side of the box.
Now, this is interesting. I just brought my Colt Officer's Model Match into my local smithy for some TLC. I asked him what he thought about boutique guns and his replies surprised me.
He said that of all of the custom shops/fancy shops he dealt with on behalf of his customers who had issues with these fine guns, Les Baer had been the most helpful to him.
I'll admit to being wrong when I'm wrong. This smithy is an old timer who actually worked on guns instead of swapping out parts. If he said that Les Baer customer service was good, then I'll go with his statement.
Still don't want any clone, knockoff, copies, custom, semi-custom, or whatever they're called. I'll stick with Colt for 1911.
Sweet. That's certainly what I'd be looking for. My 80+ year old father just picked up a browning 1911 in 380. I must say I enjoyed shooting it more than I expected and have always especially like the Dan Wesson 1911s (and revolvers). I may have to pick one up one of these days.
Even Kimber will give an accuracy guarantee.

Your illogical contortions and statements with the faintest whisper of veracity conjurers visions of you as a Life Coach mentoring charlatans in the art of quackery.
So fnfalman, do you think the military should carry the M1 Garand as their battle rifle?
I see that you've expressed a desire to see the military ditch the M4 platform and adopt the SCAR rifles. Stop being ridiculous with your SCAR (Colt had the M4 first!) nonsense, fella.
