Conversion question

Got a crazy question...maybe. Some background...while talking with a prepper buddy on mine the discussion came up about firearms (imagine that) and the availability of parts, ammo, etc. Something he mentioned got me thinking...he has a Glock 23 and a 1911 with different uppers for the Glock...9mm and 22. His #1 reasoning for these two guns...as you know parts can be swapped across the board with each model and parts are plentiful or will be. His #2 reason...if the SHTF these 4 caliber will be more plentiful than others, so...I'm not a Glock guy...stupid questions to follow...can you shoot 9mm through a G23 with just the top end swap? Can it be done in the opposite direction...G17/19 would you be able to shoot 40S&W with a top end swap?

My G23 too. 2 Extra barrels, and some 9mm mags are really easy to carry.
get one of these:

and you won't need an AR-15 either!
I wouldn't give up the AR just yet. A 147gr. 9mm sighted in at 50 yards will drop almost a foot at 100 yards and about 14.5 FEET at 300 yards. You'll need a flatter caliber like .223 if you want to reach out with your shots.

Twice I have put a KKM 9mm conversion in a gen3 23. Both functioned perfectly with just a barrel and 9mm magazines.
I once put a LW conversion into a gen3 35. Even with correct mags, springs, ejector, extractor, or whatever else I tried to get it to work, it wouldn't go a full mag without having at least one failure. Soured me on both conversion barrels and Lone Wolf stuff. (The ridiculous looking logo burned into the barrel hood didn't help much either in that regard.)

Skip the 1911, you can buy two additional Glocks for the price AND Glock parts are so cheap you can afford to own plenty of spares rather than hope to find parts when you need them.

I would think in a true SHTF scenario, like say Hillary gets elected, the ammo that you always see sitting on the shelf at Walmart during each drought, in that yellowing bent corner box, is the caliber you want to focus on for a SHTF scenario. Maybe a caliber nobody else has a gun for? I'm just sayin'... :whistling:

I believe what we have experienced in the past will seem tame to the next emotional responses to Hillary or anything anti-gun. The speculators who are waiting with cash in hand will buy out inventory and sell at greater profits. For those preparing, ammunition will still be an issue. For those reloaders components will still be an issue. If you have not prepared for the next emotional roller coaster, Good Luck.
Ps I believe any caliber will be bought for further profit, too many people verbalizing the same philosophy and thought process, you will not see product on the shelves.

I've been reloading for close to 50 years and shooting pistol as long. I've got two Dillon 650's enough components to load 35k 9mm and another 2k 44 mag. The last episode several years ago left many flat footed in procurement of components.
Walmart had lines every morning of their allocated shipment of ammunition. With 10 million new gun owners I suspect more impact, .40 S&W
and any other pistol caliber will be consumed. I suspect tonight's debate might prompt more consumption.

Tell me how it turns out. I think I have some concrete that needs pressure washing...

I fail to understand the worries about ammo and a SHTF scenario. Keep in mind how much folks spend on a quality handgun and rifle. Usually for half that they could have a very good stash of ammo. For an equal amount (if they truly worry about ammo shortages) they would have enough extra for plenty of bartering even.

I believe the logic is to own the handguns, post pictures, and shoot them infrequently. Realizing that running down to the store to get a box of ammo and finding someone else has bought the last box frustrates. Over reaction starts the chain and emotion sets in. There are those that speculate, and take advantage of this logic and practice.

The new firearm owner seems to spend the money on acquiring the weapon (with one or two boxes of shells). Additional ammo and mags seem to be secondary or an after thought.

I guess look at the threads about conversions, many want to be able to shoot 40 as well because THEY feel it will be on the shelf. Spending money on the conversion but not the ammo.

You do realize the idiots are the ones that failed to prepare.

Don't forget molds to cast that shot in the still available shotgun shells into
buckshot and slugs, if one waits long enough you will not be able to get
molds either.

This is not perfect but it does work in a 20 ga, I wrap enough TP under and
around it to center it in the wad, it also works in a 12 ga tri ball load.

Here is some for 12 slugs and buckshot loads, remember also for a cheap but still
effective load in many revolvers a round ball that is a little over sized will turn your
44 or any caliber into a modern cap and ball gun, only better.

https://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item/0000690282/single-cavity-shotgun-slug-12-gauge-78-oz

I have these molds but have never used them yet but have cast round balls in
standard molds for the 454 and on down.

https://www.midsouthshooterssupply....8-cavity-000-buckshot-mould-point360-diameter

https://www.midsouthshooterssupply....vity-point330-diameter-(handles-not-included)

If you want to have some good cheap fun with the 12ga get a .662 to a .678''
round ball mold, the .690 lee mold can work but it is too big for the wads.

FWIW, I have used lp primers in different rifle calibers, just start low and
work up just the way you should do anyway, have even reamed primer
pockets in some pistol brass to use lr, start low and work up.

Have done the same thing only a lot more with sp and sr, don't need
to ream the primer pocket deeper with the small primers.

Did an experiment with the 454 Casull, very high pressure loads, with sp
and sr primers, you would not believe the results, sometimes the small
pistol primers would be higher FPS, same in the 9mm.

The key is use a medium burn rate powder, that helps.

I use sp regularly in the lighter 454 loads, most pistols don't need a large
primer either.

We may all have to get real creative some day, one reason I like guns that
shoot many different cases, and don't forget the boolit molds, they are only
twenty dollars each.

Last week I shot three different cast boolits in the 223 with good results and
three different cast boolits in the 30-06, most rifles are great cast boolit guns.

For those that like subsonic loads all you need is a good fit cast boolit, even
in the 30-06, about five to ten cents a shot.
