Good shooting. I think you are using the classifier exactly the way it should be used. It gives you a good idea of your skill level at any given time. I only shoot it once every few years. I'm not an IDPA member anymore so I just like to see where I stand from time to time. I also agree that IDPA is a great way to practice defensive skills you can't do at a normal range or even in most classes where they line you up to shoot. Keep with it and you will see great improvement over time.
We'll keep at it but I don't see myself becoming a pure "gamer". It's just one piece in the puzzle for me. Will always try to "keep it real". For example, I keep my Glock 17 as my nightstand gun but rarely shoot it (compared with my 19, 26, etc.). I've already decided that I'm using it in the next match. But I also plan to shoot in "BUG" at some point with my G26 or even G43. Given the fact that the times for BUG are more lenient than SSP, ESP, etc., and that I shoot the G26 pretty much as well (on some days, better) than my 19, I actually have the best chance of making Expert in BUG.
I didn't watch the video, can't access it from work, but what is it you are trying to accomplish in IDPA? If using it for practice, then many never shoot a classifier, it is only required for sanctioned matches. I shoot a classifier every chance I get, usually 4x a year. It is the only way for me to judge if I am advancing my skill set. I have won several matches, but that is as much you shooting well vs everyone else shooting like crap. So the classifier is my measuring stick. I'll never make master, just not enough trigger time & my eyes aren't getting younger, but I'll keep trying.
Tips for being better? Don't miss at stg one. It's the easiest place to get solid times & zero down, but missing a headshot won't help your overall score. Stg two take a little bit more time strong hand, you are a bit further. Move quickly toward the target, drawing as yo ugo, then slow down for your shots. Backing up is opp, move slow, get all your shots off in less than 3 short steps.
Then stg 3 is where most lose their minds. It is target shooting in a hurry. A tip that I figured out shooting revolver. Your POA needs to be shifted a bit higher. Your eye sees COM, but COM is NOT zero down. The zero down is about 4" higher, so make a small mistake in trigger press & you are throwing 1s or even 3s. At the barrel string, draw as you move to kneeling, you can be shooting as soon as your knee hits the ground. 5sec for that string is my goal with good hits. My goal on stg 3 is less than 40sec raw, down pts in the teens or better. That will get you to Expert in most div.
I love the IDPA events - if you only do range shooting, especially just indoors, you can really lull yourself into a false sense of competency. IDPA is very humbling - even for those who have been doing it for years. Related/reminds me of this passage from Massad Ayoob's 1980 book "In the Gravest Extreme" -
When you shoot the classifier, don't shoot it any faster than you can shoot zeros, but don't target gaze.
If you get bumped, you want to get bumped at a match.
