CZ75 / Canik Comparo contd.

Gentlefolk,

A little while back, I posited a question: Is the CZ 75B worth $200 and 36% more than the upstart Canik clone?

After some introductory waffling, I came to a firm conclusion: I dunno, it depends.

A couple weeks ago, I took the two out for another shoot, at an indoor range. Following are the images. All shots were taken at the 15 foot mark, the only change from my previous shoot and this was I wore new glasses, which is kind of a "duh" and could account for my less-scattered grouping. Or, maybe I am getting used to the two and their differences.

Spoiler alert: my current opinion between the CZ 75B and the Canik? I dunno, it depends. For me, that day, each were either spot-on or all over. This was clearly the shooter issue, since it was happening with both pistols, so I can't blame the tools.

In terms of function, both pistols performed with no type of failure.

Canik - 15 feet:

===============================

In terms of personal preference, it all depends which one I am shooting at the time. The CZ seems tighter, more unified, nimbler. The Canik feels stouter, fills my hands, provides a slight better recoil pulse as a result of more apparent mass/surface area in the grip.

The CZ has better sights, but not hugely so.

In the vanity, vanity, all is vanity department, I just _like_ the brushed chrome of the Canik better than the flat black of the CZ. Then again, for social occasions, I would prefer the low reflectivity of the CZ over the brighter Canik.

I would enjoy seeing other opinions. As they say in the academic world "more research is indicated...."

I have a CZ 75B compact and Canik C-100, the CZ75B compact clone. Both are very similar in everything but price. More support for the CZ but many things will also work for the Canik.
Hard to tell which one I am holding or shooting without looking.
Kind of a toss up.

I think the Canik will fall into one of those "I could have bought a Canik for $xxx and am kicking myself since" threads we will see in a few years.

Yeah, you shot the "Shark" , I have the compact version. This comparo deals, with the S120, more of a direct CZ clone.

They are good pistols. Not "good for the money" but, IMHO, good pistols.

Its a nice looking piece of metal. Got this one from Gunbroker, Valley Gold in Victoria, TX, great people to work with. I don't know what the distribution deals are here in the U.S. I _think_ that unless you are near one of the major dealers or large cities, this is going to continue to be an Internet acquisition piece. Saw my first Canik, the Shark compact, at a local gun show, so the are penetrating to the hustings.

Nice write up. I like your writing style.

When I get some change I'm going to invest into a canik. Maybe the SP01 clone. Or a compact. Something to work on like the trigger and grip for fun.
Thank you, CB.

It would be interesting to see what a trigger guy could do with the Caniks. I am not aware of a SA-only version, but I could be wrong. The Canik is very comparable to the CZ75B SA/DA model I have and while neither has a glass release, you know on both when the hammer will drop.

I was shooting with some family today and played with just the CZ. I am starting to figure that piece out. Got to be pretty decent out to 35 ft with it. Now for some single quality time with the Canik.

Caniks are nice but I just love my CZ 75B matte stainless. Very nice pistol.
I need to do a comparo between the CZ and the BHP. That would be kinda unfair, since the CZ75B is new and the BHP is an Israeli cast-off refurb. Plus, the BHP is SA only and the CZ is SA/DA. But I could really get into HiPowers.

I once met a local guys who did a lot of fun cerakoting. He also worked on CZ and Caniks like they were on in the same. He would do up the triggers and hammers, paint them and they flew off the shelf. Very nice person and he let me hold a few. I was impressed and wanted to buy everything he had. One day maybe.

Guess it depends on what you want it for and expect to get out of it and all that. The CZ will always have more resale value and be "worth more". That said other then that "value" is it worth $200 more..probably only to someone thats worried about a guns VALUE..Im not so no, id probably never pay $200 more. I just want it to WORK and be RELIABLE and they will both do that just about as well/equally.

I really like BOTH and if you found a great deal/sale/value on the CZ ($100 or less difference) then id probably get the CZ..but at $200 just isnt worth it to me and im a CZ fan.

I would say that is a fair assessment. What is the worth of a gun for a particular user? We all have our thresholds and opinions. IMHO, if there is an advantage to the CZ over the Canik, it is in the margins somewhere at a level I usually don't wander. I am thrilled to have a CZ for the sake of having a CZ. But I am equally pleased to haul out the Canik at the range.

lol im more of a barely scrape together $400 or have to trade something for something more expensive..I only have 2 guys(ever) I own that I spent $650+ on a M1 Garand and a AR thats IT..everything else I own was around $400 OR I had to trade another gun and cash to get it... I have a $900+ Remington Premier sporting 1100 12GA..but I sold a AK74 to finance it..

Thats why I pay a LOT of attention to these types of guns. Im currently looking to get a full size HD/SD gun that I can put a light on ...the Canik and Taurus PT are high on the list are the EA clones.
I love to find a fellow bottom-feeder!!

I paid $750 or so for a Ruger SR1911 Taleo edition, the most expensive fun in my personal Arsenal for Democracy. As a bottom feeder, I think you would enjoy the Canik.

Caniks are excellent pistols in my experience. I have 2 C100s (Tristar) and a CZ75 Compact, all 9mm. One of the C100s is my CCW because it's lighter than the CZ (aluminum alloy frame vs steel frame).

The C100 weighs a little more than a Glock 19 and takes a 15 round mag. The CZ takes a 14 round mag which fits and functions fine in the Canik. Extra 15 round mags can be ordered from Tristar.

I've put over 2500 rounds through one on my Caniks and it has been flawless thus far, so, IMHO, from a strictly fit, function and quality standpoint...no, the CZ is not worth $200 more than the Canik.

What I would be interested in seeing - but not so interested that I am volunteering my examples - is to have the Canik and CZ go through a 10,000 round firing test and see which survives the best.

Is the higher cost of the CZ justified by longer performance? Dunno...

I called Tri Star on Wednesday of this week. I wanted to know what if any difference there was between the Tri Star and the Canik guns. The customer service guy told me the Tri Star is the importer and the gun are made by Canik, pronounced JAN ic. The he said some of the small parts would interchange between the Canik and the CZ-75b, but Tri Star carried a large department.

Then I asked him about magazines. He stated that Canik / Tri Star gun would take Mec Gar CZ-75B mags. He would not say if Mec Gar made the OEM mags for Canik.

This was the first time I've dealt with Tri Star, and I found their Customer Service very helpful and friendly.
