Anyone here a fan of the 45 GAP?

How do they kick compared to 45 acp? Will this caliber die? Any real advantages to,it?

Kick is less than ACP of comparable weight. This of course with comparable loads/bullet weights.
And why is that? Same bullet, same velocity, how is recoil less?
I'll add to the same bullet, same velocity, BUT higher pressure (due to smaller case capacity). If anything, from a physics point of view, I'd expect more recoil.

Once again, the people with little to no experience with the GAP like to denigrate it the most. I've not met anyone who has one, that doesn't like it.

Had the GAP come out before the .40, it would have been much more popular. Probably trading positions in popularity. The GAP came about for many of the same reasons the 40 did. Guns chambered for 10mm were too large for some shooters. Double stacks in ACP had the same problem. GAP platform solved that problem.

Ammo is available online; but I'm not worried about finding ammo, I reload. It's also a great round if you reload. Many of the same components as 45ACP. Same primers as well if you reload SP ACP (which I do).

It's now a niche round. Only some fortunate ones will discover that.

BTW, Bond Arms makes a very nice derringer in 45 GAP.

I have nothing against the 45 GAP but disagree about it possibly being more popular. The first guns had issues. The 40 offers higher magazine capacity in the same size guns. I'm not speaking against the round. Just saying that I think it coming out sooner would have had little effect on it's popularity.

What new glocks have not had problems? Even the sacred G19 had some real teething problems when the NYPD adopted it.

IMO, the GAP is dying for the same reasons as the .357Sig. Good as they may be, they answer a question nobody is asking. Modern +p 9mm is so close to .357Sig, and the 45 gap had no real advantage over the 45acp to begin with--with the possible exception of about 5% of .45 shooters. If you're going to take-on a highly popular mainstay round (.45acp) that has millions of guns chambered for it, you better be doing something spectacular to even get looked at. 357Sig at least brought significantly higher velocities, flatter trajectories, and generally better accuracy---but, with just a pinch of room between 9mm+p and .40S&W, it didn't leave 357Sig much room to flourish.

I think part of the problem with GAP is that Glock didn't try very hard to educate the masses on the benefit of it, and it didn't address issues that most people are concerned with.

With caliber, people typically consider power and capacity.

GAP really doesn't address either of those issues in a way that established calibers haven't already.

GAP addressed an issue that many people never even understood (grip thickness, and trying to get the most rounds possible in a magazine).

Glock gets more rounds in a double stack magazine, per inch, than practically anybody else. (Especially in 45's.)

This fact gave them trouble with the .45 Glocks, forcing them to make the grips bigger.

That's a great point. Glock didn't educate the masses, because that's not their primary market. Agencies understood because they had people who needed a smaller grip, and supposedly made the request to Glock. Otherwise, why would Glock undertake the expense of development?

i have owned a Glock 37 for quite some time. It is very accurate, easy to shoot and i can pump +P ammo all day long. After 5,000+ rounds, no failures or wear. I have a chrome slide, with stainless steel barrel and spring. Night sights. Carried a G-21 in LE, like the 37 better. Not that hard to get ammo for a decent price.

The 40 is not that big a deal. We carried those until it too 4 rounds into the chest to stop a guy not on drugs. We went to the Glock 21. One or two shots to drop someone with LE Ammo. I purchased a Glock 37 for my own use and never looked back. I get ammo locally, mail order and even know who makes the most powerful GAP Ammo. That i will use for home defense. I carry a compact 9mm that also shoots +P all day. I use Cor Bon and has a 444 ft lbs. Greater than most .45 ACP/GAP. But my GAP will fire you up using Mag Tech LE Ammo.

So, when you shot someone 3 times with a .40, he kept coming, but your 4th shot stopped him. When you shot someone 2 times with a .45, he stopped?

.45 must be two times more effective than .40 at stopping someone (assuming all men are equal, and all shots hit the exact same points on these identical humans).

Good story. Now we have all the proof we need.

BTW, was that on "Middle Earth", or deep space?

Bac1023, it is obvious you are not a fan of the 45 gap. I respect the fact you are entitled to your opinion. The solution to a non existing problem cliché is a little tired and worn out, no matter how original you think your phrase is. I think it is a good round and I trust my life with it every night I work. If you have a different caliber you prefer, good for you. With today's anti gun movement you should be supporting any ones choice of caliber.

I didn't say it was a solution to a non-existing problem. I said it was a solution to GLOCK's problem.

I didn't realize that my GAP was so limited according to the comments on this thread. I only just over 30k rounds through it with most of them being reloads. I have played with the 1100-1200 loads but 200 gr SWC's at 975-1025 are my favorite load right now. I have found it to have a softer recoil than a similarly loaded 45ACP - this can vary from the guns tested.

There are those of us who like the round. There are also those that talk $h!t about it and have never shot one.

I fully admit that I have never fired a 45 Gap. I just never found anyone that had one that I could shoot. My local range rents pistols, mostly Glocks, but they don't have one to rent. I have owned and carried 1911's as a LEO. I still have one 1911, and a G-21, I recently sold my G-30s, nothing was wrong with it, we just didn't get along.
I don't talk trash about the 45GAP, I don't have any reason to because I have never been around one.
The main reason is the same one for not getting a 10mm, 357 SIG,
I feel that I have all I need 22, 9, 40, & 45, Rifles and Shotguns.
Why get into new calibers, enjoy what I have.

After (5) threads this year and not hating nor liking the Gap I can say I enjoy the insight to each posters personality shared by their comments and the tenacity or lack of something else to discuss without opposition.

Measuring enjoyment and its cost is hard to do especially when ones' ego comes into play. My cost is the time spent on GlockTalk, hope yours is also fiscally sound.

On earth. The 40 failed even though there was so much hype as to its ability to stop a drugged perp. The .45 ACP has proven itself in LE time and time again. BTW, no one but the police and military can buy this ammo. You can buy LE Bonded Ammo, but not this stuff. Most only needed one shot to stop them. Most died from a center mass shot. We trained under stress and when tired to ensure that we hit the first time. Had too, nearest backup could be at least 30 minutes. I have 9 mm that hits harder at 115 gr. than most .45 ACP's including some +P.
Dude you are aware that the .40 has more velocity and muzzle energy in duty loads than .45 ACP right? And come on man there's no such thing as LE/military ONLY ammo. The Gold Dot boxes may say it but I have plenty of that "special" ammo.

By the way which mall do you work at? :laughabove::laughabove:

Yeah, I was wondering about that. I have several boxes of ammo from different manufacturers that say "Law Enforcement Only" on them. That doesn't hold any weight (unless of course it's something that is actually illegal like armor piercing). In some cases it would seem the only difference between some LE and non LE ammo of the same make is 50 round boxes versus 20 round boxes, and cost.

A very good point. All the Taurus Judges and the S&W Governor shoot the 45GAP with moon clips. IIRC, he G&A review of the Governor included testing with 45GAP. The 45GAP was the most accurate out of the gun. Just sayin.

Georgia Arms still makes 45GAP at reasonable prices if you don't reload.

ANY 45 acp moon clip revolver will shoot GAP rounds. Same as shooting 38 specials out of a 357. Competition shooters do this routinely. When I had a 625 I found the GAP rounds worked perfectly in it.

I was an avid reloader in my 20s and 30s. I bought odd calibers just to experiment. So the 45 GAP and 357 SIG draws my interest but at 60 I am a believer of the K.I.S.S. principle. The only thing I reload now is 45 ACP and occasionally 38 Special.
