Not sure if "copying" is cool (and some of you may have already done this), but I came across "Rastoff's Challenge" a few weeks ago in Tapatalk on the S&W forum. Here's my version:

Target: Clean target of your choice, not everyone has or wants to go out and get a specific target. Use a fancy silhouette target, a shoot-n-see, a laser printed target, or a blank sheet with a sharpie drawn dot on it. It really doesn't matter.

Gun: Any iron sighted "suitable for personal defense" handgun .32cal or larger. If it's a DA/SA pistol, the first shot from each distance must be done DA. If it's a DA/SA revolver, all shots must be DA.
No timer, but this isn't a bullseye match (no offense intended to anyone with bullseye experience...talking about bullseye and 3-10yd shooting distances ) . Within each string, try to keep the splits no more than about 2s.

4 shots at 3yds
6 shots at 5yds
6 shots at 7yds
4 shots at 10yds

I'm sure some of you are going to post up "one ragged hole" type groups, so instead of trying to measure center to center of widest shots, we'll measure the longest distance from outside edge to outside edge. Smallest group wins. Post a pic of the gun used with the target. Enter as many times as you like.

***
It's kind of late in the game for this, but it just occurred to me, this part might not have been clear to all. Since this is based on what's allegedly the TX concealed weapons course shooting part of the class, all shots should be done standing any grip you like, unsupported (i.e. no bench or rest). If you're handicapped (unable to stand), fire while seated, but still with the gun unsupported by anything but your hands.

Standings:

  1. willie_pete: 1.625"
  2. arkdweller22: 1.68"
  3. ithaca_deerslayer & Berto: 1.75"
  4. njl: 2.0625"
  5. DJ Niner: 2.125"
  6. ronin.45: 2.2188"
  7. norton: 2.5335
  8. Kentucky Shooter: 2.826"

I did this one standing on a hammock ( if you remember the old joke).

What? Does it have to be a DA. I'm really confused now.

Speaking of DA revolvers, I decided to give it a shot with my S&W model 15 today. I had to stop after the first 10 rounds to take this bragging shot...but I pulled several shots low at 10yds and ended up with nothing worth reporting. So, this is just the first 10 rounds at 3 and 5yds.

I did get a target worth reporting with my own P226. 2 1/16"

I tried my S&W model 15, but it just couldn't hang with the Ruger. Kind of crazy.

Nice shootin' with the SIG; those suckers will shoot sweet once you find the load(s) they like (given a good pilot, which is not a problem in this case).

Both of these have funny stories behind them.

The 15 was part of a Yuge batch of S&W guns a local chain had bought as surplus from the state DoC. Most of these were 15s, and most looked like they'd been left in a tool box in the back of a pickup truck that had a few handfuls of gravel tossed in...and really crude engraving of several digit number, like the armorer brought his kid to work and made him do it. They had so many, they put them out on long tables in the middle of the store in batches over the course of a few months. I checked several times at two of their stores and it was always overpriced beaters. IIRC, they had 3 price points depending on how beat up they were. Over Thanksgiving a couple years ago, I happened to stop by to check on the current batch and found one that was in really great shape other than a chunk missing from the original grips. For whatever reason, it was tagged at the lowest price ($275), so I had to take it. Not too long before this, I'd paid about 2x as much for a model 14 in near perfect shape. I generally shoot the 15 better.

The Sig, a friend was trying sell. He'd let me borrow it for a test drive, and the very first shot I fired from it, DA, at about 10yds, was a perfect bullseye in a shoot-n-see target. I didn't really want a Sig. Other than my couple S&W wheel guns, I pretty much exclusively shot Glocks. But this was too nice a shooter to let go.

Shot the challenge yesterday, but shot it wrong. Ten rounds instead of twenty. Group size was three inches so I wasn't in the running and ten more rounds wasn't going to make the group smaller. Doubtful that I will make it back for another try.

I took some time today to hit the range and shot the challenge.
My CZ75 SA in 40 came with me:
Revolver Air gun Trigger Shotgun Gun barrel

... And my Colt Trooper Mark III in 357:
Air gun Wood Plant Trigger Revolver

... And my Taurus 85 snub in 38 Sp.:
Revolver Plant Wood Air gun Trigger

I wanted to test Willie_Pete's theory that an SA would take it. I guess not this one. Here's the best I could get out of it:

2.925".
I fired warm 40 reloads:180 Gr plated bullets running on average 1010FPS.

Next came that DA wheelies.
I shot 120 rounds of warm 38Special reloads out of both. 125 Gr plated bullets at about 925FPS out of a 4" barrel. Snappy in the Taurus, soft shooting in the Colt.
I fired about 120 total rounds between the two.

Here's a shot of the best Taurus group at the bottom and the best Colt group on top.

Motor vehicle Sleeve Automotive design Automotive tire Bag

The Taurus group measured 3.125", and the Colt came in at 1.68".

Gotta love that big honking Colt.
After shooting the challenge I took 50 rounds of head shots at 25 yards with a similar cadence to the challenge using fully loaded 158 Gr. 357 mag reloads. They clock at 1225 FPS out of a 4" barrel, but all that weight and those massive grips really soak up the recoil. All head shots were on target.
It's a very accurate gun.

Willie, it's up to you to defend the honor of SA triggers the world over. I'm sorry my friend, I fell short.

I'm going to give it one last try this weekend with a 9mm 1911. The almost hurricane that was headed to my house is now going more souther.

njl didn't allow the 22TCM because he said the recoil was too light. He's never fired my 160 grain 9mm Steel Challenge loads.

That would have been interesting and probably entertaining as Mr. Deerslayer and I would have fallen all over each other to give it to the other guy. [emoji16]

The tie was broken but not by much and there's still 5 solid shooting days in August.

I have to say, the participation and shooting in this challenge has been outstanding! You came up with a good one.

Yes; every month. A new one will start 1 Sept.

Dealers choice ( winner of this month gets to pick - looks like ark needs to start looking for one ).

O K Judges decision time again. Went out this AM before it got too hot. 120 rounds between two guns. These are the best of each. First tried a Smith 1911 in 9mm. Close, but no cigar - 1.75"

Next I remembered another SA auto I had lying around; my old Model 52 Bullseye gun. so I tried that. Looks like 1.625" to me.

Judges time; It called for self defense type gun and I am sure not many people carry one. Luckily the challenge called for 4 and 6 rounds. Since the magazine only holds 5, I had to leave the last round in from the four string and charge another magazine. Certainly not an ideal SD gun.

So, njl, that's why we pay you the big bucks for your Soloman type decision.

Well, If I only had this and a derringer, I would carry it for SD. But if I had this and any other gun, I would probably carry any other gun; even a DE.

BTW, I am trying to talk myself out of having to come up with a Sept challenge.

More pushing the envelope huh? [emoji3]
The rule was "suitable for personal defense" so though the mod 52 is an interesting choice, it's a large enough caliber to play and I suppose could be used for home defense.
I won't be making any more attempts at this month's challenge. One of the kids brought home a stomach virus and I feel like I was run over by a truck last night. I think I spent as much time on the floor braced over the toilet as in bed last night. Lost 4 pounds in 8 hours and have barely been out of bed today. I can finally keep water down.

I hope you and your family get well soon. I know what you're going through, with two toddlers at home and all.

BTW, I am trying to talk myself out of having to come up with a Sept challenge.

wp
Ha! You can't talk yourself out of what you shot your way into.
Congratulations on some great shooting!

Seriously now folks, I just now realized I shot the Model 52 target incorrectly.

I got so "head up and locked" about the 5 round magazine limitation of the 52 that I shot it 4,6,4,6 near to far ( should have been 4,6,6,4 ); two rounds short on the 7 yard and two extra rounds on the 10 yard.

Sorry I am causing you so much consternation, njl. My bad.

First time I read this one, I was still kind of out of it, and had to read it a few times. Since you actually made things harder (more shots at greater distance), I think we can let that mistake slide.

Since my normal range is closed today, I went to another indoor range I've never been to before. Nice place, mostly.
I brought my 14-3.
You borrowing my guns while I'm stuck in bed? I've got a 14-4 that looks just like that, down to the same grip.

BTW...at the local club where I shoot, I can do the following:

handguns or low power rifle: Any distance 0 to just over 20yds.
handguns or low power rifle: 25yd & 50yd fixed target positions
rifle: 25, 50, 75, 100, 200 fixed target positions (I thought this was yds, but the web site says meters)

This is the first I've been back at the computer since Saturday. Fever is gone, and I'm feeling almost normal.

I enjoy playing but as I said early on in this thread my range has fixed target frames I have to use at 50' and 25 yards on the pistol ranges. Hope the winner keeps that in mind for the next challenge. Also as I mentions I think if group size was divided by distance the answer would be consistent regardless of what range we shot at. Lowest number would win. I'm waiting on someone to open up a long range challenge. I've been hitting a 12" plate at 300 meter with a hand gun, might have to try 200 or 300 yards on paper and see what I can do.

#104 · (Edited)
I know I asked this before in one challenge, but I forgot where it was and we have had a few new shooters since then. How about everyone who consistently plays, list your limitations on where you shoot; i.e. range available, can't draw from holster, x rounds in y seconds, timer available, etc.

I'll volunteer to try to keep this updated.

I'll start.

willie_pete- outdoor, 0 to 200 yards, anything goes, timer
wlkjr - outdoor, 30 yards
ark- outdoor, up to 100 yards
ronin - 0 - 200 yards, anything goes,timer
ede - 50',25,50,100,200,300,600 yds, holster?
colin - to 25 yds, 1 RPS, no holster
Ithaca - to 300 yds, anything goes
njl - 25&50' pistol, 25,50,75,100,200 yds rifle
Berto- to 50 yds, no holster, timer
DJ - to 500 yds, anything goes, bad weather- to 50 ft, no holster
Norton - to 200 yds, anything goes.

I am headed to my outdoor range where pistol bays are a bout 30 yards long. I don't think I can compete with you guys but I'm going to give it a whirl. Will report on my targets later today. I will be shooting all glocks.
Come on in; the water's fine.
