Years ago I bought two S&W Model 64s in outstanding condition that had been owned by the state police in Kansas, as I recall. Gave one to each of my kids for Christmas, although I hated to part with them. The 64 became my daughter's favorite range gun; it is a sweet shooter.

I carried a s&W model 64 many years ago, and later a model 10. I thought they were great.

I really thought it was a step up, however, with an auto, when I didn't have to clean each chamber in the cylinder, and could have clean ammunition in a compact magazine, vs. a speed loader or speed strip.

My biggest beef was the cleaning on the revolver. A lot more work intensive than an auto. They shot fine, were quite reliable (two malfunctions on the model 10, when the firing pin retainer roll pin sifted and prevented the hammer from falling past the frame, into place). Otherwise, reliable, and accurate enough. I put a lot of rounds downrange between the Model 10 and model 64.

I saw a Model 65 at a gun show last year, and the price was $1,100 or thereabout. The dealer wouldn't negotiate because he was confident the gun would sell at $1,000+. Model 65 and other pre-lock S&W revolvers are just in high demand.

I think your 3" model 64 is a great gun for the woods or concealed carry. Congrats.

Correction: The gun show revolver I talk about in this post was a Model 65 .357/.38. Sorry.

If you're referring to my post #24, I misspoke about the S&W I saw priced at $1,000+. The one I saw was a model 65. I haven't checked on the current market for an excellent condition model 64, but Ii believe it will be significantly less than a 65. Still, the 64 is a very sweet gun, and I'd love to own one in 3".

This guy finished a small home repair and was offered a revolver instead of cash. Reluctantly he took the gun and I learned of the situation from a friend. Short story shorter, my offer was taken. He got more than his bill, I got a bargain and everybody went away happy. And no it wasn't a steal, but let's say it was greatly undervalued.:dancingbanana:

This 32 years old K-frame model 64-3 appears to be in wonderful mechanical condition with a few scuff marks along the barrel. Judging from the area around the forcing cone it doesn't look as if it's been fired much at all. The 4" heavy barrel has a bright bore and sharp rifling. Lockup is solid and timing is precise. The trigger's action is smooth in DA and SA breaks very crisply, however I usually replace the rebound/hammer springs to something lighter. The checkered grips are modified Magna. All and all it's a decent shooter that will clean up rather nicely.

Pinned barrels went away during the -3 production years and obviously this 1984 gun is minus that feature. I'll use the gun some and trade it when something more desirable comes along.

Major congrats, not just on acquiring the handgun but on the process involved.

That is the ultra rare win-win-win situation, where everyone got exactly what they wanted. Guy #1 got work done he needed while strapped for cash, the repair guy got more cash than he contracted for, and you got a hell of a deal.

This is why I would rather horsetrade than just pay cash, and is the only way everyone ends up happy.

It worked out well, but stumbling into these deals doesn't happen often- at least not for me.

The side plate was removed to inspect, clean and lube the gun. While it was opened I replaced the hammer and rebound springs. The 13 pound rebound spring was installed. The DA trigger pull was adjusted to 7.8 from 10.5 (lb/oz) and SA was reduced from 4.2 to 2.11.
