Thumbs down vs thumbs forward for Self Defense

Hi Mas,
I shoot Isosceles, but thumbs down.
Like having my thumbs out of the controls/slide or hanging up on anything clearing.
Seem to shoot very well that way.
At recent "Hard Target" Counter-Terrorism training had my grip corrected to thumbs forward.
Is there really a clear advantage to thumbs forward for self defense?

Thanks for your advise,
Barth

Thanks Mas,
I'm a Black Belt first and a gun guy second.
Weapon retention is a big deal to me.
Weapons are just one more tool in my tool box.
And I shoot really well thumbs down.
As always totally appreciate your expert knowledge.
Thanks again.
Wishing the best for you and yours

Take Care old friend.
Barth
