QC went down a lot on RCBS scales when they moved production to China. Scott Parker (a noted "tuner" of the Ohaus scales) wouldn't even mess with the Chinese versions.
Either way, it is a shame. I've got two (2) US made scales. I bought one new in about 1974, and the other used about 15 years ago (came with a used 550).
I understand the difference as I think you do as well. I was in such a business for awhile. Having a QC department is to catch poor quality in the manufacturing process which is hopefully a small percentage. I'm in favor of building quality into the process meaning the person behind you inspects your work before conducting their own. The last person does a quick overall and identifies bottle necks. No QC department as they are complete expense.
I guess a good price. A good beam scale doesn't wear out. A Lyman 500 is my first scale in the early 80s and served me well until I went electronic earlier this year. If I give up the e-scale craze, it goes back into service.

Sure but if your QC allows it out the door that is your quality standard. That is why they developed the bad reputation.
If a print gives a +\- .001 tolerance and QC passes to +\- .010 that will show in the quality of the product.
This is what their QC let go out the door, when they changed where they were being built.
And one can argue that the end result is poor quality. If their QC caught them and scrapped them only letting out decent scales then there would have been a difference between the two.
